RMinMN: "I have a Cuda 168 transducer that I would let go for the price of shipping but there is a catch.

The catch is that the transducer is connected to a functioning Cuda 168 and you have to pay shipping for both. I hooked it to a battery this morning. It draws about 350 ma at start-up then drops to between 60 and 80 ma.
"
Thanks, Ron. Sending you an email.

That's the same as a Lowrance X-4. If you can get it fully functional for under $100, I'd do it.

I picked up a Cuda 168 at Goodwill (when it was open) for $8. Was able to apply power to test and it seems to be working. Unfortunately the transducer did not come with the unit. Would anyone possibly have one sitting around that they may sell? I see some on Ebay for around $40. Do you think this unit is worth putting more money into it? Would only be used occasionally in the BWCA.

That sounds like a deal to me, better jump on that!

In my opinion these and the other similar monochrome displays are ideal for BWCA\Quetico use. They have very low amp draw, are cheap, simple and light weight. I have a 2500.00 system on my big boat but take a hummingbird 153 (a similar unit, 89.00 new) in to canoe country. It only draws about 50ma and will run a week with 8 lithium AA batteries. The whole system, battery pack, transducer, cables, mount and head unit only weigh a couple of pounds. It shows me all I need in canoe country. The monochrome displays have been discontinued, and the color units will more than double energy consumption, they usually require the back light to be on. I use to have a cuda 168 on my little pond boat and it did fine. I would get a transducer and power cable and use it. JMHO
