I don't have specifics to LLC but generally speaking in May/June they'll still be up shallower. Look for structure that you might associated with walleyes such as points, reefs, humps, pinch points between islands, etc.


You can certainly troll with stick baits, spoons, or paddletails. Trout seem to love a slight pause/restart or turning of the canoe causing the bait to do the same. They'll often hit right after the bait resumes moving.


I believe that cisco is the primary forage in LLC so find baits that imitate cisco. Silver/white plastics, silver/blue spoons, silver/black stick baits.


Casting can also be successful if you find good structure and are relatively confident there's trout there. Use a varied retrieve with erratic motions.


I've also heard, but admittedly never experienced myself, that salted shiners tossed out from camp on a dead bait rig with a slip sinker can be dynamite. I'll be trying that out this May/June (fingers crossed) on the gunflint side.

Thanks for the help moustachesteve. That's incredibly insightful stuff right there! I'm hoping this will be the year. Especially since we'll be targeting Walleye mostly, be nice to get a Laker in the boat too.

Trolling, if its a lake you don't know well... so you cover more area. In May troll a orange and silver Little Cleo (2/5 or 3/4 oz.) with lots of line out. Let it sink a bit before starting the troll. Do not tie direct to line but use a good-quality snap swivel. They won't be very deep in May.
