Just got back from crooked, mayfly hatch kinda slowed everything, but still caught some big smallies during hot days/nights. Think plastic worms caught the biggest fish.

I find that leeches do the best in heat. Keep them in a bait king in deeper water then daily bait needs in a mesh bag.

As far as finding the fish the big pike and walleyes will be deeper water. Only the smaller fish can handle the heat. Fish the sun, that is fish East side of the lake in the morning and west side in the late afternoon. On islands or sunken reefs same thing. Fish the shadows. They are going to be deeper, try a search bait like a husky jerk to find them then fish that depth.

Any tips for fishing in the heat? We’re headed to Crooked Lake July 4.

Go deeper, avoid mid day, fish hard in the early AM, fish moving water, and I second what Savage Voyager said.

X2 -- I was out on the Mississippi in St. Paul from 930am-1230pm today. Surface temps were 80-82 and it was 90 degrees in my car when I pulled the boat out of the river. Fish were absolutely snapping in 5-10 feet of water. I had my first walleye within 5 minutes of dropping a line, and consistent fish every 20 minutes or so from there. Ended up with 6 walleye, 2 pike, a white bass, one missed. Best walleye was 24, best pike was... too big to net and measure with just me in the boat :D

edited to add: ALSO -- Really noticed the fish today were lethargic. They would hit pretty much like normal, then it was just one weak head shake or two and they gave up and allowed themselves to be reeled in with minimal effort. Even the bigger pike was less spunky than I'd expect. The only fish that really gave me a thrill was the whitey.
