I just measure my rods from the bottom up to 20 inches and put a scratch or notch on the rod. Then when you catch a fish you can hold it up against the rod to know how long it is. At home, my rod has scratches at 16,17,18,19 and 20 inches. I can usually tell how long they are having seeing 100,000 smallmouth, but sometimes I check anyways :)"

Friend of mine did the same, but just tattooed the measurement lines onto his arm LOL Local limits on crappie, plus 18 inches for walleye limit.

Tristian5431:
did you get any measurements on the fish?"

No.

I chose to leave my scale at home because of the amount of portages on the trip.

I have also had bad luck with the "measuring tape" that they sell near the registers at bait and tackle shops. They usually last about one outing in my backpack before falling a part. So, I also chose not to fool with a measuring tape.

I have considered using a Sharpie on a canoe thwart to allow measurement of fish. I haven't done it yet though.

It was the trip of a life time and the biggest bass I have caught so far and I did not get any measurements.

I did bring the waterproof point and shoot camera though.

Terri - 1st time fishing together in the shark. Her 1st bass. This was a pig. Biggest and nicest fish ever pulled into my boat. And she caught 4 more! That’s a limit. Go pro girl! Lost 2, before she got in the zone. Oh man, that’s a nice bass.

Doesn’t compare to the smile tho!!!

That was sweet. Made the shark smile too.

rdgbwca: "Thanks everyone. It was fun to land while knowing something big was on the end of the line.

It was also easy to get my needle nose in its mouth so I could release it back to grow even bigger."

"Free the fighter" is a wonderful way to fish. Sadly, she can't grow much bigger because that's a top end fish.

That's a beauty. Love the darkness you get in Canoe Country.

My friend just sent over another photo of the same fish that he post processed in light room. I think the lighting is better on this one.

rdgbwca: "I just returned from my second trip to the bwca. The small mouth were biting.

I caught the biggest bass of my life from the northern camp site on Little Loon Lake using a leech and a slip bobber.

The bobber didn't go under, rather it went side ways and I decided to check it. This was the second fish I caught and it immediately began peeling drag even though I had set the drag when fighting the first fish.

"

That’s awesome!! Congrats!! Agree the smile says it all.

20 years from now you won’t remember who your Governor was, who won the World Series, or how much you had in your 401k..... but you will remember this day like it was yesterday..... good on ya!!

(Note: the above isn’t my original text; it’s paraphrasing a great ad (Loomis?) that used to run in In Fisherman)

2 Small Mouth Bass caught in the back bay. The single bass was a 3.5 pounder and in the second pic one was 3.5 pounds and the other one was ONLY 3 pounds. Best of his fishing life so far.

"

Since you weighed them, did you also get their lengths?

The largest was apx 18 to 20 inches, the best I could figure. My son is 6ft and the fish went from his knee to the ground.

I've caught bigger, but my "personal best bass" was about a 4#. It was at dawn on Moosecamp Lake and kept on jumping. It woke up one of my tripmates sleeping in a tent nearby. He yelled at me to keep the noise down but it was the smallie making all the noise! That is why it was my "best".
No photo, just released it to wake up other people!

I like the guy who has the min sizes tattooed on his arm. That made my day. What about slot limits on certain lakes. That could get messy.
Bass are fun to catch. I’m on a swim bait frenzy right now. They sure seem to like em.
