Ha! Good point. I have got pretty efficient. Hoping the footage does some good in spreading the word.

its tricky! I Spend 16 hours a day fishing. A mounted gopro pretty much gets it all. A phone does the rest. The editing is the real torture. Worth it in Jan when you get to relive every moment and its -20. Amazing how much I forget. Too much of a good thing I guess :)

Are you sitting down? Toppling Goliath. I live in Rochester MN. Spend time down there trout fishing. Bet you could find it online.

A fun addition to my trips. Weather can decide if its any fun or not! We got lucky with low wind and cooperative fish. Clear water helps.

We could last year, but not this year. I can't imagine staying on those lakes without Canadian permits. Half of the water would be off limits! Some nice day trip options into Canada if you wanna work for it. Worth the price of admission. No live bait in the Quetico FYI.

That's why I said I need a cameraman who doesn't want to fish :)

Are you shooting all the time? If so, how many memory cards and batteries do you consume in 16 hours?

I do not advertise articles, I provide people with helpful information via the written word. I am just trying to help people with wilderness fishing, I'm not selling anything. I'm sure people on here will tell you I have helped them with their fishing and not charged them a dime. Not sure what your issue is with me trying to help others? Maybe I should start doing helpful fishing videos? "

Don't let it bother you Mike. I enjoy your articles and all the pics you put on insta. Keep up the good work.

I bring in 3 big lithium brick batteries. 6 or 7 lbs! Keeps my radio, lamps, phone, sat phone etc all charged. A gopro and attachments not a big deal weight wise. I fill up 6 or 7 64gb cards. Its a hassle and a joy.

We all wanna be like Mike and land the big ones: 40+" pike, 30+" walleyes, and 20+" bass. He's the 40/30/20 fisher!

I haven't watched all of your video yet, looks terrific so far! Why I stopped watching was that you were able to fish Quetico, but you just couldn't camp in Quetico? That is the first time I have ever heard anyone mention that was a possibility. So as long as you have a Canadian Fishing license and a RABC you can still fish in Quetico? How did you find out this was a legal course of action? This might really change my next trip to the Boundary Waters. Thanks!

I think you misread the original post. The video is from 2019. Or are you referring to not having a permit for Quetico?

Okay question time in order for me to learn and grow in my quest for fishing mastery:

1. I have never tried jigging for lake trout. Only trolling because it seems like I can cover a lot of water quicker. I noticed you were using large jig heads and twister tails and caught quite a few.
* How did you determine where to jig? Seems to me with focusing on one
small area that you want to have ultimate confidence you will find fish
there?
* How many hours did you spend searching for trout before you finally
found that spot? Only curious since the video doesn't really give you that
kind of detail. I only ask because I would be curious to know how much
work you put in with this style of laker fishing before you found them.

2. I noticed you were in a little channel jigging for walleye at dark. What time
would you say the walleye started moving into the shallows? What depth was that?

3. On that point of structure where you were jigging for walleyes in the day. How deep water were you jigging in? How fast did the water taper off?

Thanks for any details. You jig a lot more than I do and it's because I always seem to struggle more with locating token walleye spots and having the confidence with sticking to that spot when I know I can just run a lindy rig around and catch them but I would like to get better at jigging. I'm constantly doubting myself wondering if I'm at the right depth at the right time of day etc. etc.

I emailed Williams and Hall outfitters and they told me it would be illegal for me to enter Canada from the USA to fish. Can you provide me with who you spoke with that said it was legal to enter Quetico to fish? Thanks!

This was a whole new experience for me too. We were really set on making it down to knife, but a full quetico trip is coming for sure. No live bait up there but it sees a 1/3 of the people! Powerbait is king.
You have to spend a bit for the passes and licenses but well worth it. They make it easy but get em lined up a couple months ahead. Maybe even more these days. Still not fully aware of what you need to overnight there. I think right now nobody is allowed in. The people at the Quetico station could not have been more helpful.

Yep this is 2019. Canadian government answered everything for me.
Not a possibility this year! Just mentioning I just got back from a recent trip in the U.S.

Generally wind swept points where there are volleyball sized rocks and 10-15 ft of water are best. This is late June though and is maybe the best time for fishing. They move deeper in the summer. Fall is a whole new game with turnover. Usually the fish are biting right on the bottom. You can find em shallow at night. Channels are nice bottle necks if the wind was blowing in them all day. This channel was maybe 6ft. Most of the time you wanna be anchored. Lift your jig 6" off the bottom and hold it still. Bouncing a jig is always my second choice.

Again for lake trout this is early summer. Spring you can find them in 5 feet. Summer they go deep. Smaller lake trout lakes you can troll spoons and raps and they will chase them up in clear water. Just get as deep as you can. We have 1/2 to 3/4 oz jigs with 5" tails. Every lake is different, but find a deep hole near a shelf to shallow water. This is often at either end of these cigar shaped lakes. Fish the deep holes. Drop big jigs straight down and crank em up fast when they land. They hit going down or up. Lake trout by design hit prey moving up or down with skill. This is almost impossible in wind. Also in warm weather it is important to play and release them fast. The top layers of the lake are too warm and the fish need to be released quickly.

I think it's worth it. Your videos are top notch and you'll have them to enjoy all your life. Your kids and grandkids too!

However, six or seven pounds or thereabouts of batteries made me wince. Don't those foldable solar panels work?

puckettgame6
07/13/2020 05:18PM

Thats the way I see it. Never have found a solar panel that packs well and has any serious recharging capabilities. Weather has to cooperate etc. I could prob get by with 2 instead of 3. I am always fearing running short and not being able to finish! Probably to a fault. Also it feels important to spread the word about the BWCA. Places like these are best protected when loved by many.

I'm not sure if Zwater's comment was meant to be as rude and snarky as it sounds, but I'd like to say the Quetico Mike has been incredibly helpful to me personally. His willingness to send out his articles for free, to anyone who is seeking more information about fishing in Quetico is refreshing and generous.
