I always have an extra bobber, have never lost or broken one, but I also know the first time I don’t have an extra I will need it, so why tempt fate.

bobbernumber3: "fishonfishoff: "AmarilloJim: "How many floats do you use? Can't say that I've ever lost one."
I have lost them shore fishing. The hook jets snagged on bottom, you break your line and the float drifts away and away and away!"

Don't you have a canoe? Just a thought, but if you had a canoe you could use it to paddle out and retrieve the bobber?

I did see a slip bobber lost once when a northern jumped out of the water and came down and swallowed the bobber. My fishing partner said "What do I do... set the bobber"?? A minute later, it popped to the surface.

One bobber is all you need."

Does anyone find it kind of funny how a guy named bobbernumber3 only tells you to bring one bobber?

Good point... but one is a fishing bobber and the other is related to bobbing in the water.

I think you might be overthinking this. :)

Bring another small tackle box for just the bobber stuff? or slip them into the spare room in a pocket of an existing tackle box? Or let 'em ride loose in the packs until needed?

You could also look for slip bobbers that are smaller/more compact (like the Wobble bobbers). No long stems to break and take up room. Just a thought.

I usually rig them up on my pole before I go and then tie them into the canoe until I need them. Then the hook is tied on.

If you want to bring extra bobbers you could run the extra onto your line on your pole as well. You can transport 2 bobbers on your pole as easily as 1. Then just take the extra off and stash it with your fishing stuff until needed.

If you've got 3 poles each with a slip bobber I'd probably bring 2 extra bobbers in case 1 or 2 are lost. Not likely you'd lose 3.

The pocket on your PFD works fine.

I am a big fan of the slip bobber rig. I have been putting the slip floats in my plano trays. They tend to take up a lot of space in a plano tray.

What is your favorite/most efficient way to pack slip bobbers for travel in a canoe?

Quart sized Zip Lock Slider Freezer storage bags. The plastic slider zipper works so much better than a basic zip lock bag which never wants to close.

We haven't brought a spare paddle in many years after lugging one along for eons. Because we never lost or broke one. If you don't need it, don't take it... within your risk level.

Probably.

There were a few helpful suggestions. I might just stuff one extra in each PFD. I also liked the idea of putting two on one rod while travelling.

Also, locally I have lost them while bank fishing a river and they float away quickly never to be seen by me again. This is not the most likely scenario in the bwca.

Exactly what I was going to ask. I only bring one for the day and a lighted on for night fishing. Those take up the space of one Rapala lure.

This is how I think too.

You'd have to be an extreme minimalist to fret about taking a spare bobber. I don't think you'll need a ton of spares but 1 maybe 2 spares for the entire group doesn't seem far fetched. If they break off sometimes its easy to go get them, sometimes its not. I'm sure we all bring extra fishing gear we don't end up using.

I am planning more of a base camping/fishing trip with my two sons (13 and 10).

I will probably bring at least 6 slip bobbers.

I do have a tendency to over pack and bring things just in case. These canoe trips are breaking me of my over packing habit each time I take one.

There is a chance alcohol was involved if I was shoreline fishing. I tend to leave the canoe high and dry in these cases. Spare bobbers are fairly cheap, and it only happens on rare occasions that I lose a bobber. The shoreline fishing with alcohol involved does happen much more frequently. LOL

I know I overpack, but I usually have a couple in my tackle box... Of course, I tend to have to set up other people's kids' stuff on trips. Plano cases for all my loose tackle, including my (more-than-one-is-too-many) bobbers.

as far as needing more than one slip bobber , i was fishing with a friend who lost his bobber while playing a fish , as it broke his line above the bobber , so you do have that slim possibility,, not exactly sure how that happens , maybe old fishing line ?

I usually pack 2 in a zip lock baggie that then goes into the soft-sided waist pack that I use as a tackle bag. I've never needed more than the two but if I went with a larger group, especially with my kids, I'd pack a couple of extras!

I always bring more than one. For walleye fishing, I bring 3 different sized bobbers. Designed to float nicely above different weights. Deeper water and more wind require more weight on the line. When you’re attempting to present your bait very close to the bottom it helps to have a bobber that’s balanced nicely with the amount of weight attached to the line.

Just my 2 cents....

:)

And, to answer OP’s question....

I limit myself to 2 planos for a trip. The 3 bobbers go in a ziplock bag for the ride in. They just get tossed in my pack with the rest of my stuff. We base camp so once we reach our spot I find room in the Plano box once all my rods are rigged.
