I know, wrong crowd, but this is the only fishing group I'm part of online and I know there are a few of you who run motor boats as well as canoes.
Our new boat has a 25hp. Like other small outboards, it has the transom bracket that allows you to mount the motor using the screws to clamp it down, without drilling holes through the transom and permanently mounting -- but the person who rigged it mounted it permanently, I guess for safety? My question is -- is that really necessary and is what are the major drawbacks to just using the clamp bracket instead?
We have a trip to clearwater end of September, 10hp limit. I was thinking of removing the 25 and renting a 9.9 up there for the trip. It'd be nice to be in our own boat with our own electronics, etc. But if it's going to have negative long-term effects we'll just rent a boat instead.

It's just a safety issue. As long as you have the holes already drilled I'd use them with your 25. Also keeps smaller hp engines from being stolen. I have my 9.9 kicker bolted in.

Hadn't even thought about theft, good point.
If I were to un-bolt the 25 and clamp on a 9.9 on for the trip, I would want to seal off those holes to avoid water getting into the transom. And I wouldn't want to repeat that whole process twice a year for my BW trips, so once I take the bolts out they wouldn't be going back in. I guess I'm leaning toward renting the boat at Clearwater. I'd rather be in my own boat with comfy seats and gadgets but we'll have to save that for Sag. This is a time when the tilt-up rule would sure be nice, I have plenty of room on the transom for a second small outboard.

I’ve rented fishing boats from Clearwater outfitters before. They have nice boats. You will be fine.

Yes, this will be our third stay at CWL and though I’ve never rented a boat I have eyed them up at the dock. 16 foot Deep-v Lund bench boats with 9.9 Honda four strokes, pretty typical outfitter setup. The biggest drawback is I’m on a ticking clock. Can’t start fishing until 7am and then have to get it back to them by 3pm for the full day rate. No night fishing, no trolling motor, no rod holders, bring your own fish finder, etc. not to mention benches vs cushy pedestal seats in my boat. All that makes it tempting to try and find a way to make my own boat work, that’s all.

if you got the $ rent , easy trip up ,
they do make long neck pad locks to lock up the small OB at the thumb screws , will also prevent from vibrating loose as the thumb screws are short and not much leverage.

Jim I wish that was in the budget but I’m pretty tapped after saving 3 years for the new boat. Future goals. I was going to hang onto my 6hp from the old boat, but it was a short shaft and I got a great price for it.

Awfully kind of you Shock! I’ll shoot you an email later on perhaps. Bigger question is still whether I want to go ahead and remove the permanent mounting bolts and just roll with the clamp mount to enable easy motor swaps. Gotta look into that lock for my 25 to see if I’m comfortable with the added stability they offer to the clamp mount (keeping the screws from turning loose etc).
