Never fished Crane for Lakers. Is it worth the effort? Do not know the Lake well, other then getting shuttled to Lac La Croix. Any specific areas you would target?

AmarilloJim: "DNR doesn't report any LT. Walleye and Sauger #'s look good." I didn’t look up the DNR report. I seen a site that listed them as a species in the lake, but I had never heard anybody mentioning catching any. I’m sure you are correct....

Walllee,

Midwest Outdoors reports that Crane Lake is a multi species lake that includes lake trout. Lake-Link Minnesota says Crane is 80 feet deep at its deepest point and also lists Lake Trout being in Crane Lake.

Midwest Outdoors- Crane Lake has Lake Trout

Most of the resorts on Crane Lake list lake trout as a fish to be caught. Muscoda Lake, a portage lake just west of Sand Point is a known lake trout lake frequented by locals .

Here is a YouTube video of a woman catching a 16 lb. lake trout on Crane Lake in June 2011 while fishing with Daves Guide Service. In the video we hear that she landed 10 trout that day.

Woman catches 10 lakers on Crane Lake June 2011

On the other hand a friend of mine that vacationed on Crane Lake for 20 years says that Crane has depths down to 70 feet there are few if any lakers in Crane Lake.

May want to give Mark Anderson of Anderson Outfitters on Crane Lake a call and ask about laker availability in Crane.

Walllee, let us know if you find some lakers in Crane.

You could probably fish Crane Lake every day for the rest of your life, and never catch a lake trout in there! Might there be 1 or 2 swimming around in there? Sure. Worth targeting? Nope! Winter time would probably be best chance to catch one.

My guess and I could be totally wrong is the guide took the rail portage into Lac La Croix for lakers. On his web page he mentions Lac La Croix. I’ve only heard of guides/people catching lakers on Mukooda or Lac LaCroix. It is common for resorts to list species of fish that are available even if it is a connected lake or a portage away.
So it is possible to target lakers just not on Crane Lake.

Grew up on the Verm river, have spent most of my life in the area, worked as a dock boy at Nelson's as a kid and met plenty of "poorly educated" tourists, and this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say trout are in Crane lake.

I hate to burst your bubble but there are no trout in Crane lake. I repeat, NO TROUT in Crane lake. Mukooda, and LLC on the US side. Several viable options on the Can side. David being the closest.

You're more likely to catch a muskie that made it's way down the river from Vermilion but those are pretty few and far between I'd imagine as well.....

Thanks for the chuckle boys hahaha.

MuskyMike,

Thanks for clarifying that Crane Lake is devoid of Lake Trout.

Goes to show you that you can’t believe everything you read and here on the internet . LOL.

“FAKE NEWS” even up in the northwoods. LOL.

Eric -- I was (trying) to be funny/sarcastic with that comment. Looks like I failed!

Great fish by the way! Really similar to our boat's best, caught last year on the Gunflint.

I guess you're both fall colors enthusiasts because everyone knows the fishing sucks at the end of september ;)

Not necessarily...I had the best Lake Trout fishing of my life up in Quetico last september from the 23-27th. Me and a buddy caught 60+ lakers out of a canoe in 3.5 days fishing, even caught the grand slam on one lure (30' tail dancer, UV Pink Firetiger) the last day of fishing between two lakes on the travel day home. 5-6 over 30" largest coming in at 35" and most were in the 21-28" ranger. We found the right reef and trolled over it the whole time.

Lakers can be especially active in late September if the water temps are cool enough. They are getting ready for that shallow fall spawn and are feeding like crazy.
