Top water I think would be very poor. I have caught smallmouth the last week of September stacked up on sunken reefs or bars. Fall smallmouth fishing can be very exceptional once you find them. The thing is you have to find them first.
With changing and dropping water temps fish are going to go thru mood swings from being vary aggressive to tight lipped.

Hello everyone,
Heading into the BWCA in late September. Is it worth trying for a smallie topwater bite at that time of year? Thanks...

Just got home from the BW. Late Sept. is tough fishing. I don't think top water will be good option. Send me an email - queticomike@yahoo.com - and request fall smallmouth fishing info. and I will send you some advice.
