rdgbwca, thanks. Down here in VA I fish mostly shallow rocky rivers for smallmouth and musky. Down here I use a lot of soft plastics and shallow crankbaits and topwater. So the techniques I am use to and have confidence in down here are probably going to be different than what works up in the BWCA lakes.

Packing for my trip that I am leaving for this Friday. My route has me hitting lakes that are listed to have Smallmouth, Northern Pike, Trout, and Walleye. I've packed a bunch of crank-baits to cover 6' to 20' depth range in various sizes/colors and a bunch of little cleo and kastmaster spoons in various sizes/colors. Is it worth taking soft baits as well such as flukes, sinco's, swimbaits, curly tail grubs etc? Anything else anyone would like to suggest? I like to pack like but don't mind splurging a little weight if its worth it to carry extra fishing gear.

Pack on some live bait, crawlers can be deadly this tome of year.

A couple Mepps spinners. Silver or gold. Maybe a buck tail.

Your small mouth techniques should apply.

As far as confidence lures, I have watched my friend catch a lot of fish (bass and pike) trolling the red 5 diamond daredevil in Northern IL. He trolled it in the bwca earlier this month and caught small mouth bass and pike on it.

I have caught small mouth with the SR6 shad rap. Here is a compelling clip of what it can produce in the boundary waters. If you watch until about 57:48 you will see the lure.

What are your confidence lures that you catch fish with?

I like the chartreuse SR6 Shad Rap and the 20 foot purple descent deep tail dancer. I like little cleos. I have caught fish with these (and Mepps #2 or #3). I would feel confident tying them on in the bwca.

I know people that catch bass with senko's. I have yet to catch one with a senko.

I have caught fish the the zulu rigged zman shad.

I read a book dedicated to canoe country fishing that makes the case that the only thing you need is jig heads and white twister tails. Catches all varieties of game fish in the bwca and Quetico. I read the book but have never caught a fish on a jig and twister tail.

I pack in leeches as plan A. I pack in night crawlers as plan B. I catch most of my fish with live bait under a slip bobber.

I am most likely to use a lure when trolling.
