Spent Friday-Sunday chasing lake trout on the Gunflint Trail. We caught trout every day but the bite was never exactly "hot." We had to work for em and our biggest was 22. Threw back a female approx 15 inches that was absolutely packed with eggs. Kept enough small males to eat like kings Saturday night.

Fish are still holding mostly between 30 and 50 feet. It was deeper than we were hoping for when we made plans for late September. It really didn't fish that much differently than mid-June of this year. We tried to stay on the 50-foot contour as much as possible and our most productive baits were a #11 Tail Dancer in Purple Flash, a #9 Tail Dancer Scatter Rap in Purpledescent, and a blue/chrome Crocodile spoon.

Thanks for the report and nice to hear that you caught some trout. Our group generally goes in early June and have never did a serious fall trout trip but were talking about it just last week. It would probably take an early fall with colder than average water temps to get them up shallow spawning before the season closes. That 50 - 55 feet of water range is always a good place to start, be it the late spring or fall.
