Fish the bottom left arm of Horseshoe (by camp 639). There is a spot where it widens up a little bit. Find the walleye hanging out in there.

Live bait for walleyes. Easy to deal with that time of year as it typically doesn't get too hot.

In 2019 Poplar was still much covered in ice on May 11th, be sure to keep an eye on things and keep in touch with Rockwood or their webcam to watch progress. We had to change our EP that year at the last minute. The ice was gone 4 days later when we cam back that way however.

I took my kids up to Wood Lake 2 years ago...BW first timers..and they are dying to go again. We missed last year with the COVID freak-out going on and I regret not going now.
My college age kids also liked it enough they wanna bring a best friend and a boyfriend.
My window between school end, summer session and a possible trip to basic training for my son looks like the weeks 7May - 24May. I have a big project coming in the first week of June so my preference is to back off that by a couple weeks. So looks like week of May 10th.
So I think if I basecamp on Horseshoe, it looks like all kinds of great shallow areas for spring fishing by the southern campsite. Winchell and Vista would be good trips.
That is pretty cold fishing but what I am reading all the spawning and post-spawn fish will be up in the warm or running shallow water.
I am a 'take tackle for any and all situations' kind of guy but for this early. I don't think any crankbait deeper the 5-7feet will be useful.
Some Fatraps type lures, husky jerks, maybe some x-raps (but I don't like fishing jerk baits from the canoe...My kids aren't that good of fishermen so I prefer the "constant retrieve and 'float to the surface if I get distracted' type lures) and some good topwaters...jigs in white, yellow, chartreuse and black and 1/8 oz jig heads...maybe some 3" tubes...some redeye spinning spoons (work good with 8 lb line)...erie dearies in 3/8 oz, slip bobbers and some leeches...last time in July fishing topwaters we had rapala waking minnow in natural perch and we caught everything but walleye on those. The DT Fats with a 1' depth work great on a slow wake producing retrieve. And I always have a clear Zara puppy with me...when nothing is biting...go to a black jig or a clear puppy is my motto. Maybe some big flukes for the erie dearies to target northerns??
I think that should do it.
Maybe some castmaster spoons if we go to Misquah for lake trout...
I would like to see the kids hit a big northern...#5 Mepps? What does everyone think?
The only thing better than a fishing trip is getting all the toys together for the fishing trip.

Mepps #5...the dressed aglia's have some pretty new combos. I kinda like the blue gill pattern. It'll catch more fishermen than fish!

Absolutely bring the Whopper Plopper. Cast it near dark toward some structure near camp on a calm night. Nothing better than hearing and feeling that strike and jumping out of your skin.
