Crappie would also be an option, though I have no idea if there are any in the lakes you're traveling. And to be clear, it is illegal to target fish that are not in season, even if you have no intention of keeping any.

I'd look at it this way -- you have 2 days to do nothing but explore and scout. Pay attention to everything around you. You should have a pretty good sense of where you want to start fishing when the 15th rolls in. Watch the birds, watch the bugs, watch the disturbances in the surface, pay attention to the wind and the water temps and the bottom composition, gather it all in.

I'm a very amateur fisherman and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to fish before the opener. We're headed up May 13, so we have 2 days before the opener. Heading in at Sawbill and doing the Cherokee loop down the Temperances and back to Sawbill through Smoke/Burnt.

Is perch about my only option here?
