Good guide advice on the walleyes. Good Luck on your trip!

I thought that with early ice out, fishing would be a little stronger for all the species, even by opening day. When I talked today with a guide from the East side up the Gunflint, he said otherwise. Here's a brief summation...
- The best fishing will be with lake trout. - Walleye will do well in moving water and in shallower lakes where the water warms up faster. Have a slow presentation with live bait. - Smallmouth will not be easy to catch until closer to June, and even into June.
I'm still going for a grand slam on opening week, but I think I'm modifying my group to be on strong lake trout lakes. I might even go for some brookies. That'll mean paddling in further, but there will be fewer people as well and hopefully more campsite options...
I cannot wait for the next 2 weeks to go by...

That's good to hear about the lake trout. I'm heading in the 16th and will be hitting all lake trout lakes. Frost, Little Sag, Gabi, Ogish, Tuscarora, and others. Can't wait!

I'll be up with the boat the weekend after opener. Chasing lake trout on Burntside and then walleye on Basswood. Fingers crossed.

It's been a long, cold spring. Can't wait. I've done OK on some of those shallow, dark lakes in that area for walleyes around opener. Shallow. Go get 'em.

I think neutrally buoyant stickbaits really shine in cold water also because you can fish them slow with occasional quick twitches to induce strikes !

I would second that. If you haven't used the rapala x-rap before, you need to buy a few.

Third. Also propose dynamic j-spec and HD trout in addition.
