Found them pretty shallow in a small lake trout lake that we got to from our EP out of Ely. Literally were fishing the shore and drop off maybe 15 ft from shore. Some big guys too. 4 of them was more than enough food for 6 guys.

A buddy and I were on Oyster the 25-28th. Decided to hunt to for / Lakers for the first time. This was my first laker. 5/8th orange and gold spoon about 35feet deep real slow retrieve with wind. Caught 5 more, but significantly smaller. Good luck

deepwater: " I figure there are probably a few dedicated LT anglers out there that would have the same questions I do. Hopefully this thread ca be updated on the depth and tactics as the season progresses. I am going in all of next week up the Gunflint and I am hoping the Lakers aren't already down deep. If this is the case I can't complain as this is already my second trip this spring.
So the questions.
When were you in the park?
How did you find the trout?"
Fished Thomas about a week and a half ago. Got shut out the first day with a cold front. Connected the second day running deep crank baits at about 20 feet. Lakers were coming out of deep holes in 40-70 feet of water to hit lures trolled at that depth.
Got into some good fish in the 24-27" size.
Likely different now!

We caught three large lake trout on Pine last week trolling gold and purple deep diving rapalas in 20-30 ft of water along the south shore (west side of the lake). Even in the hot weather, they were still reasonably shallow.
Far different than my previous lake trout fishing in August.

I fished Seagull this past week. First LT caught fishing very slow in 80 feet of water with a large swedish pimple. Basically trolling into a stiff wind at .5 mph or less. 11 more caught in 15' of water with a gold and black floating jointed rapala. J11 4 3/8".
Long time fisherman, but these were my first ever lake trout.

I was up along the border, Granite River to Sag 5/27-5/31 and, like some I others I spoke with, the fishing was sloooooow. I put in about 16 hours of trolling, marking several fish between 20-35', but they just didn't like anything I was dragging around. Didn't try jigging for the lakers.
