Anyone been up to the Malberg area this year? Heading up soon with some fellow anglers. Looking like the weather is ready to warm up, I hope the fishing gets hot too! We fish for walleye, but also try for pike and bass. Any reports or insights are welcomed. Considering a day trip to Kivaniva also. A trip up the Louse to Frond or Boze worth it? Thanks.

Following. Heading to the Malberg area June 13th. Not sure if you'll be there before or after, but will provide an update from our trip.

I just got back from Malberg/Polly. Had a very hard time finding fish. Only used artificials- black hair jig, inline spinners, double bladed spinners, Whopper Ploppers, lipless cranks, lipped cranks (shad rap, scatter rap, squarebills). Absolutely stunned we didn't catch more than 2 pike, and the only bass came on the WP60 and WP75. Only caught 4 bass, 2 pike, and 1 walleye. Saw people catching walleyes but all of them (ALL OF THEM) had live bait.
IMO... bring live bait if you want to catch fish.

Plenty of leeches will be along for the ride

Just got back from our 8 day trip. We fished pretty hard every day. Base camped on River Lake and had good fishing from kivaniva to fishdance, 5 personal best fish for our group and plenty of eaters. Went to the Alice rapids and found some hungry smallmouth, fisher lake produced a couple nice largemouth, trolled through beaver and caught a couple nice smallies and had a big northern miss my lure on the surface. Kivaniva produced some largemouth and pike but we couldn't find the walleye. Overall a fantastic trip until we moved back to Polly for a day before take out. Little luck fishing, thunderstorms and the most people I have ever seen in the BW, it was like a campground. Safe to say I wont be returning to Polly. Overall a fantastic trip though.

I'd recommend heading west to "River Lake" - seemed like an awesome area that is likely under-fished. Some nice shallow rocky spots for bass and plenty of dropoffs that were probably great spots for walleye. I read good things about it, we just didn't fish it super thoroughly. I really enjoyed the southern area of the river about 1-1.5 miles north of Fishdance- more rock formations and elevation. If I went back to that area I'd want to spend some more time there.

Find current and you'll find fish. Plenty of current in plenty of spots in that whole area

I too would head west to River Lake and just below the rapids into Fishdance or even down to Alice

Hey Bumstead,
How was the trip/fishing? Heading up that way with intentions on camping on River lake next week. Did you make it over to Kivaniva?

You sent me some info last time I went to the area, Cyclones. Thanks.

Thanks, I wondered if a trip that way would be worth the time.

Didn't make it to Kivaniva. Did fish below falls heading to river and around the bend a fair ways one day on the river, but storms turned us back toward camp fairly early. It was incredibly hot. Hot enough to knock our leeches out in about 2.5 days (I'll be looking for a submersible storage option for future trips). Fishing was tough on Malberg that week. We ate fish a couple of times, but had to work for it. Some eye's and large bluegills, and even ate a smallie or two. Mayflies aplenty surfaced the last morning or two we were there also. I've always jumped in the lake to rinse off a few times. This year, we willingly floated on life vests for extended periods of time due to the heat.
Let me know how you did. Thanks.
