Inspirational. From your experience and knowledge. Which lake would be better next spring, Burnside or Snowbank. Would like to put some more time into next year. I've got some planner boards and down rigger that's just sitting in a bag. I want to broaden my fishing experiences next year. You've definitely got it zeroed in. |

yogi59weedr: "Nice. I have really struggled to find fish on both lakes during the open water season. I have had a little luck on both during the winter, vertical jigging different baits and using tip-ups with live suckers, but have really struggled to find any fish in open water. Generally, I do think that Snowbank gets a little less pressure than Burntside and would likely give you a better chance of putting fish in the boat. I would head up to the northeast side of the lake, as far away from Harri Island, which gets the most pressure year-round. Larger baits on Snowbank (cisco is the main forage), smaller baits on burntside (smelt is the main forage). Depending on when you go in the spring, you may not need any weights to get down to depth. I would start by trolling medium diving crankbaits and spoons without weight around relatively shallow structure (8-25') and move my way deeper if you are not finding the fish. Best of luck! |

Question: Where do you buy your Dr. Spoons? I haven't been able to find any down here in the metro, Marine General doesn't carry them, and the few spots I've looked around Ely didn't have them either. Do you just order them online? Could you convince Piragis to stock them? |

I have a bigger boat now and not looking to venture out more than a mile or so. On the verge of better health now so hopefully next years trips will include this. I've done the charter boat thing and would rather fight them on light to medium tackle... Added question...... Can I use 2 rods while trolling on supioror? |

yogi59weedr: "It's always been my goal to go down to Two Harbors and troll the break walls for some trout. That sounds like a lot of fun! From the videos I watch on youtube (mostly Superior Angling), it seems like the average trout on Superior is like 24-28" and there are some true monsters in there. I am not sure about the regulations on Gitch, but I am pretty sure the Lake Trout season is open year-round and you can troll with two rods/licensed adult. Someone please correct me if I am wrong... |

thegildedgopher: "Good stuff as always, Eric. I have always ordered mine from bass pro or direct from Yellow bird fishing products (the manufacturer). They offer free shipping over $50 so I buy a lot at a time. I discovered this last year that they occasionally offer 40% off and free shipping during holidays. They did it for Black Friday (and I think again for Fathers's Day - sign up for their "newsletter" and you'll get promo emails) and I loaded up with 12 or so of them to get me through the year (they are like $8-$10 each if not on sale). Unfortunately, here at Piragis we are limited on space for fishing gear so we mostly carry Bass/Walleye/Pike baits because that is what our customers ask for. Hopefully, more folks will get out and chase trout in the BWCA and we will get more requests for Trout baits, but now it is a minority of folks who even target trout. I will do my best, though! |

thegildedgopher: "Good stuff as always, Eric. I've found them at Fleet Farm (Lakeville location to be exact). Not sure if they have any right now, but in the spring they did. |
