Huskys you can tie direct to the ring or use a snap. I'd probably tie direct using mono and use a snap with braid. Original floating rapalas and the like (stickbaits with no split ring attached) usually work best with a duo lock style snap or nonslip loop knot. Spoons I'm less well versed on but with the big ones I usually use a steel leader with a duo lock at the end attached to my line via swivel because of the possibility of sticking a northern.

I stopped using wire leaders and swivels a while ago. Now I use a heavy duty flourocarbon leader (14-30#, depending on what and how I am targeting) and use a VMC crankbait snap (doesn't affect the action). If you are not good at tying line-to-line knots, get a simple barrel swivel to connect the two.

New to BWCA fishing, so far kind of got the hang of the slip bobber. Now, progressing to trolling with Husky Jerk (plus their deeper diving cousins). How should I connect this to the line? Direct tie? Swivel snap? Just a snap?

I also use Little Cleos, same question. I have used a Mepps #3, same questions.

Thanks.

I don’t like snap swivels as I think they effect the action of the lure. But with pike I use a wire leader to keep from losing $8 to $16 lures.
You will want a swivel with spoons and spinners to keep from getting line twist.
You don’t need one with rapala type lures.

I tie directly to split ring on a husky and use a snap swivel with a spoon.

With your Little Cleos or any spoon, you want to use a swivel and clip.

With most stick baits like a Rapala I use some type of loop knot, so it doesn’t impede the lure action. Don’t tie directly to the lure eye or ring. Learn how to tie a loop.

With any Mepps spinners you will need a swivel and snap.

If you think you are in Pike water you want to get a titanium leader that comes with a swivel and snap.

Basically, if the lure you are using spins, wobbles, or has any action you probably need a swivel and snap.

As you advance you might learn to tie from Braided line to a swivel, then to fluorocarbon or titanium then make a loop to your lure. Use this when you have a spinning lure, want a good hook set, invisible line at your lure for clear water. For Pike you need a heavy fluorocarbon or titanium leader. Make sure the leader is long enough, because they roll, and the gill plate will cut your line.

I now know what I've been doing wrong! I'd just attach my lure right to the snap swivel. Duh. No wonder I never caught much except weeds.

with cleos or spoons , i'm usually targeting pike or lakers , always use a steel/titanium leader , neither fish are leader shy , but if my spoons do not have a split ring on them i will add one , as i believe it increases the action on spoons/cleos. with some rapalas i use a split ring but not all , mainly the husky jerks and the CD9
