Mattbrome: "We will be staying in Ely Sunday night but will not be in town until later in the evening. Planning to leave Ely to head to the EP around 6am. "

If they know you're coming, VNO and some places are open until 9 or 10pm. Make some phone calls

Or stop in Duluth or somewhere on the way up a few hours earlier than you're in Ely

I am headed in at Mudro in a few weeks on a Monday. I am looking to get a half pound of leeches to take in with us (approximately 6 dozen). I am having trouble finding a place in Ely with bait that is open early on Monday morning. Does anyone have any insight?

What is early? I think Arrowhead Outdoors opens at 5am. The Y-store outside of Tower opens 5am. Vermilion Food and Fuel in Tower opens early also. Ely bait shop will be expanding their hours soon.

Yep, Voyageur North Outfitters in Ely. There are also a few bait shops in the area.

We used to phone The Bait Box in Superior and pay for a pound of leeches with a credit card. They left the leeches double-bagged under the back steps and we picked them up around 2 or 3am as we drove thru town.

Get them on Sunday on your way or whatever depending on your travels.

Why not pick them up on Sunday?

Thanks for that info. VNO = Voyager North I'm assuming. I'll check with them. Where else can you get leeches in Ely?

I have been tripping for almost 30 years now but I have only brought bait a few times. The guy I'm headed in with this year wants to do lots of fishing so I figured we could bring some this time around as I don't think we will go really far. Definitely heading for Basswood Falls for a night or two then back toward Horse or Fourtown for a few nights and maybe up to Gun.
