Thanks for the thoughts, jeffw89.

Yogi -- I'll look out for a call sometime. Or we can just chat on the 13th in Ely. We're getting up there mid-afternoon. Hopefully get checked in at VNO and pull the permit for the next day, and then going fishing near Ely until 7 or 8.

If anyone else has some advice I'm all ears. It surprises me - for a lake as big and productive as Basswood, there is very little info floating around.

blutofish1: thegildedgopher: "We will be fishing Basswood in the motor zone, on Tue/Wed the 14th-15th. This will be just my 2nd time on Basswood. I fished it on May 23 last year on a cold & rainy day. Caught a mess of smallmouth and pike but couldn't boat a single walleye. My strategy when I'm fishing blind on a new lake is to troll shorelines and breaks around islands and points until I locate the target species, and then to cast/jig/bobber. Since I never found a walleye I pretty much kept moving all day long.

This year I'd like to go in with more of a plan. I would greatly appreciate any pointers or recent reports. If you have any spots you're willing to share, feel free to use the email link under my username. This is a 3-generation boys trip and I'm trying to put my dad and kid on some fish.

Right now my plan of attack is to skip the shoreline trolling on the eastern part of the motor zone, and hightail it to the lincoln/washington/half dog island area, as far west as frog bay. Looking at the areas between islands, and the series of reefs in that vicinity."

"This is my favorite area in the motor zone."

Thanks blutofish1, I got your message and found it confirmed some of my plans. Very helpful.

We didn’t fish the Canadian side of basswood since we were in a motorboat and can’t be in quetico. We did fish the Canadian side of sag and gunflint and caught nearly all our fish in Canada."

Did you needany type of Quetico day pass/permit, or just a Canadian fishing license?

The eastern end up sag where we were, and all of gunflint, are not part of Q so no permits required on that front. For sag we needed a Bwca permit of course. Other than that, mn license, Ontario outdoors card, and Ontario non resident fishing license. Do your research on rules— no alcohol in boat, no organic (live or dead) bait, can’t anchor or touch ground or moor alongside another boat, etc.

Did you end up fishing the Canadian side? Any issues if you did?

Not gonna lie, fishing was awful for us. Portage truck guy said the walleye had been on fire in 4 ft of water in wind bay — all we caught there were hammer handles. Fished leeches, minnows, and crank baits.

Did better on Shagawa than basswood but still struggled. Things picked up for us on the gunflint side.

I’m not sure how many more day motor permits I will pull for basswood. It’s a lot of time traveling up the moose chain, dealing with PP, and then working your way west to get hop around spots. Probably makes more sense on an overnight trip where you can try to put a pattern together over multiple days.

That poor guy that reported that walleye fishing was on fire is now a villain forever lol.

I don't have any specific experience on Basswood, but mid May the first thing I would do is target current areas. By June the techniques you used could be more effective as the fish will be further removed from spawning and starting to move into their summer locations. I would spend time jigging reefs, weed lines, or sharp breaks on the wind blown side of the lake also. Dont be afraid to try a wide range of depths - I have found success in 4 ft of water or 35 ft depending on the season and conditions.
