We just got back from our June 3-11 BW trip and it was awesome. Great weather, good fishing (5 Smallies over 20", nice walleye action and a day trip to a lake trout lake that produced 16 lakers that were released except for a few that we cooked up for a shore lunch) and memories galore. One of the grandkids caught the biggest laker and another one caught the grand slam on his first trip.

Stay in touch! Blessings"

Awesome to hear you and the family had a good trip Dan! I was going to email you and ask. I was curious with the high water and late arriving spring how the fishing was. Feel free to reach out via email and I don't mind sharing with you where I caught them. If you are going to hit that area I would go in the next week or two as they leave once the water warms up to a certain temp.

What would a decent spring be like for you? 25" smallmouth?

What would a good spring be like for you? 30" smallmouth?

I'm assuming a great spring would be hooking a 68" musky with a 32" smallmouth in its mouth.

Lol... I catch your drift. I was saying it tongue in cheek for the most part. I like catching quality over quantity so from that standpoint it was fantastic, especially with the new PB. However, I never caught a ton or found any certain concentration all Spring. I worked hard for these fish. They were in weird areas and it was just a different Spring all around. All these fish were from the same location that I fished 3 different days. I spent 5-8 hours on each trip and only caught 8-15 fish each trip but as you can see the quality was excellent. In the past there have been trips that I have caught over 40 in one 6 hour fishing trip to this location. So, I guess that is what I was referencing.

This was also true in other places I fish as well. Never really found a concentration of Smallies anywhere. Usually, in the Spring I can really hammer them pre spawn when they are staging and prepping but no such luck this year. Never caught more then 20 in my different outings.

I know, I know, I have probably been spoiled. That's why I love fishing so much, the thrill of the mystery and figuring out patterns and putting it all together. I was ecstatic with the new PB. I wish someone could have been with to get better pictures, a girth measurement, weight, etc but oh well. I also feel bad about holding trophy fish vertical but that was all I could do to snap a couple quick pictures before releasing her.

I have had a pretty decent Spring here in Wisconsin. I hesitated to share these as it is not BWCA but a couple members encouraged me to post. All fish in Photos are over 20" with the big one being my PB at 23.5". It shattered my PB of before of 21.75". I had caught several smallies just short of 22" but none even quite hit the 22" mark.

Most were on a fluke (z-man technique), a couple on the whopper plopper, one on a wacky rig, and one on a ned rig.

The flexible tape was not quite aligned in this picture yet. I snapped a couple quick pictures and got her back quick as I did not want to stress the fish. Unfortuately I did not have a weight scale but I am sure it went 6+ pounds easy. The picture aren't great and don't do it justice but I was by myself in a kayak.

Then below is the best of the rest. All over 20".

It's all good. I just gave you a playful, English-major poke.

And I'm your fan for the BIG bass and I'm your fanX2 for this: "I also feel bad about holding trophy fish vertical but that was all I could do to snap a couple quick pictures before releasing her."

Thanks for wanting to protect those big gals. I too would have gone vertical for a quick photo if I were alone.

Unreal fish! I'm sure there's a few that size lurking around in the bwca just waiting to be caught!
