Thanks all for the tips. We did less fishing than I thought, but trolling crank baits along some rocky reefs landed us a couple of monster smallmouth and a nice sized pike. Later we did a jigged some white tail grubs around some weeds and the boys caught a hammer handle pike and had a huge pike on the line but we didn't have a leader on and he snapped our 8lb mono like a twig. Because of our travel and meal schedule we ended up just doing catch and release with all of them, but most importantly the kids had a blast.

I'm a pretty mediocre angler in general and I know August is not prime summer fishing. I'm putting in on the Gunflint side next week and one of my kids has his heart set on landing a fish. Any tips for getting something this type of year? What are they biting? I'd love a walleye to do a shore lunch once or twice but I'd be happy to even get a pike in the weeds somewhere.

Try top water lures in the shallows for smallmouth bass. Or, a slip bobber with a leech near moving water below rapids. Probably the two easiest ways to land a fish in the Bdub.

Yep, top water at dawn or dusk near rocks or weeds will likely give you bass or pike if they're in the lake you'll be on. Buzzbait, frog, etc.
You also can't go too wrong with lazily trolling around a flicker shad or some mid-sized mid-depth crank bait near where you can no longer see the bottom from shore.

Good advice with the previous two posts. Best advice I have, you can't catch 'em if you are not on 'em! Put in the time early and late and do some trolling during the day and you should be able to have your son catch a fish. Have a camera ready to capture the video or at least a photo - it doesn't get much better than a kid smiling with a fish!

Just came back from a few day trip into LacLaCroix, if you have electronics find any mid lake humps or points, drop a jig down tipped with a crawler, you should be able to catch walleyes and you may catch a smallmouth the size of your paddle. Throwing top water baits on shorelines should get you smallmouth and northern action, jitterbug is my favorite and it’s fun to see fish come after it.

Husky jerk in black and gold, 9 or 11cm trolled around points will be productive. Curly tailed grubs on a ball jig near weed beds could bring ina walleye or two. Depends on the depth 5hat they are hanging out though.

Great to hear the kids had a great time and were successful...mission accomplished! Hopefully they are "hooked". Over the years the big one that got away will naturally grow in size, both in the story and in the lake!

So in August fish actually eat more heavily and are more aggressive feeders than they are most times of year…the issue is this is also the time of year that there is the most food available. Bug hatches, invertebrates, minnows are bigger, if it is a deeper lake the ciscoes are in summer school patterns so usually off in deeper water.
Unless there is a cold front, typically bigger lures or bait work better this type of year.
1. When you do day trips or travel…troll baby troll. Even if you are in 80’ of water with no structure. On the Gunflint side fish often roam with the ciscoe schools you can luck into them and catch fish anywhere on a lake. If you don’t have a line in you can’t catch anything. These fish are active and will chase further than they would other times of year.
2. If ya get wind where a point, bay, peninsula is getting beat to death all day. If the wind breaks in the evening hit that spot. Bobbers, jigs, troll cranks. The wind will Churn up that spot and get bugs/baitfish up off the bottom and the fish will take advantage of it.
3. For kids I’d try to find reefs topping out at 10-15’ with deep water around it fish it as dusk, head out before the sun hits the tops of the trees and get set up. Anchor on top. There should be fish feeding there in the evening. You can do the same in the AM…but don’t make the kids get up and turn fishing into a chore.

Don't be afraid to try smallmouth for your shore lunch. We've done many side by side cooking taste tests with walleye and smallies in the BW. Everyone has agreed they taste similar and have a similar texture. They both taste great. For many years up there we would crush smallies fishing and not catch a walleye. We didn't know how or where, so we ate the smallies and pike. Now we're getting more confident with our walleye fishing, but still keep smallies along with our walleye's to eat.
