“ The charges are fifth-degree felonies besides the unlawful ownership of wild animals charge, which is a fourth-degree misdemeanor. This charge pertains to the men's alleged possession of fish filets on their boat. A conviction on this count could result in an indefinite suspension of their fishing licenses, prosecutors said.”

Why cheat? I'd say the roughly $400k those 2 dudes won gave them pretty good incentive.
Legally they'll get off with a slap on the wrist. Can't charge them for anything but this one incident. I bet it's like $3k in fines and some probation/community service. Maybe the natural resources folks in Ohio could also charge them with wanton waste for the filets and revoke fishing/hunting privileges.

But yeah I saw the video a few days ago when it came out. Not a good look, and they didn't get touched cause the organizer was smart and the police were handling it.
But it sounds like those guys have won a lot of money and boats in previous tourneys and years....do you polygraph them for all those? Or charge them with something and they're forced to give up boats and a few hundred grand?

My question is why on earth would they cheat? They obviously know they will be found out. You probably can feel the lead weights in the belly. Polygraph tests will tell the truth if they are being dishonest. I watched the video online where they are first accused. Lots of swearing and mad fisherman so be warned. I’m surprised they got out of there without a fight. Then they show the tournament judge cutting open each fish. They were filled with lead weights and fish fillets.
Going forward I think the top money winners should have the fish opened up to see if there is any funny business.

And it sounds like the suspicion of cheating on those Erie tournaments is quite widespread. If that’s the case, then cheaters are clearly not getting caught often enough.

How is it easier to cheat? They can cheat all they want in these tournaments. Simply weight them, record weight, then cut them open, they are already dead anyway, no big deal. If the fish are full of water, smaller fresh fish, lead weights, fish fillets you will find it.

I would add that they're not even men. I think of my grandfather, who was a man's man, an ex-Ohio State University linebacker, tall and powerful with living-tanned, callused, gentle hands, who said, "Die beholden to no man."
He wanted each of his grandchildren to live a giving life, not a taking life.
The two who cheated took and took and took and are likely looking for their next scam because real, hard work is hard.
Honesty is the measure of a man, so, again, they aren't men, much less fishermen.

They could be sued by sponsors for any money they have given them and damages. It could exceed whatever they have won. It's hard to see if they can be held accountable for winnings that they didn't catch the cheat at the time. The worst thing that happens has already happened. They have lost all credibility and fellowship among those they sought to impress.

People have been cheating at fishing contests for decades. Not surprised at all. This is just the latest one. I just hope they will be held responsible. Not holding my breath on these guys spending one day in jail.

i know we can all see they're guilty as sin, but burden of proof lies w/ the prosecution. i don't know how these tourneys work but they could raise questions about the chain of custody, etc. what physical evidence exists that they put the weights in the fish? is there a witness? these guys are total scum and they will probably get on the stand and perjure themselves, but i wouldn't be all that surprised if they walked away with a slap on the wrist. crazier things have certainly happened. entering a guilty plea can sometimes influence the judge to go light on the sentence, but i don't think they stood a chance at that in this case. too much media attention, people want blood. pleading NG was probably their only chance at avoiding jail time?
