Is this article in the bwj? If so, what issue is it in? Thanks.

What would be your guys go to lures this time of year for smallies and walleye?

If you like getting up early or fishing in the evenings I would bring some top water baits like whopper ploppers and pop r’s. The bass will most likely be deeper except for low light hours so I like to use weighted wacky rigged senkos. Tube jig also work well but hang up a lot.

Minnows in Sep for walleye. Bottom bounce.

In low light hours I will try shallower cover with top waters or unweighted senkos and slowly try deeper water until I find them.

We go up to BW the Wednesday after Labor Day. I don’t carry a depth finder but most years I position the canoe as if I was going to fish shoreline or shoal than cast straight out in front or slightly out from away from bow of the canoe until I figure out what depth the fish are at. This would change if it’s a steep shoreline. Weather and water clarity can affect how deep fish will be. If it’s really warm the bass can go pretty deep to feel comfortable.

How deep do the SMB typically go in mid september?
