My question is whether these dressed trebles really work better than non dressed lures? I have seen some being offered by Stu Ostoff on BW journal. They look really cool and probably work. I remember they were very pricey. Any thoughts?

Stu Osthoff swears by the Klos lures. Here’s the thing though - he’s comparing his previous method of trolling a spoon to more or less vertical jigging in known lake trout producing spots. So I think what’s the major difference maker for him is the different presentation and spending a higher percentage of his time in known spots fishing deeper vs trolling basins. Does it matter whether you’re using a Klos or a 1 oz jig with a big plastic? Probably less so than the difference between trolling and vertical jigging a productive spot. That’s my take, at least. I’ve fishing both ways (including with the Klos, which I’ll use again when I’m up there in a month), and I think it’s always more fun to catch fish casting vs trolling. There’s just something about feeling the fish hit, and not immediately dragging the fish behind a canoe moving 1.5-2mph to start the fight off extra lopsided.

Do dressed trebles make a difference? Maybe, but my guess is it’s probably a pretty small effect. Didn’t stop me from buying some to swap out on some lures with :)

Good analysis. There as so many variables that effect fishing success its hard to isolate any particular one, especially for a lure. I also tie my own flies and agree it is relatively easy to mimic the Klos lure tails. I also use other kinds of tails. If you take a tube jig and then cut the top half of a curly tail plastic, you put what remains on the hook of the dressed tube jig. You immediately have what I have found to be a more effective lure. That is why fishing is to fun, you can be creative and create your own lures.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but I typed "Feather Dressed Treble Hook" into Amazon and "Bladed Treble Hook". See below

SammyN: "Hi all,
I really like the look of the Klos Boys trebles. Evidently my googlefoo isn't good enough to find them. Can someone post a link to dressed trebles like they have?

Here is a pic for reference.

I actually like the look of all three, and would like to add them to some of my spoons. I know you can buy dressed trebles on ebay, but I'm looking for ones like they have (blue, purple, or a spinner).

Thanks!"

I've made almost the same ones after seeing there's.

Crankbaits: ( they have multiple options in their catalog this is what I got)

Thanks for the info and the links! I’m going to pick up a few of those as backups to my Klos lures so I can fish closer to the bottom with a better backup plan!

I can’t help you on the links but these are very easy to make yourself. I have tied 1000’s of flies and anyone can do this. If you don’t have any equipment to tie you really only need a vice. Just clamp a treble hook in a simple vice, one hand you hold the feathers or hair, other hand you wrap with thread and tie off the end. Then clear fingernail polish to seal. Done.
