that said, how about a nalgene "silo". 48 oz.

Anyone know of a good minnow bucket that is pretty small and closes securely so it can be transported in a backpack w/o fear of spilling? I'm trying to get an ice fishing set-up that's small enough to fit in a backpack so I can ski to spots on local lakes.

I was looking at the Bait Puck, but it sounds like its not meant to be watertight. I also thought about using a Berkely Gulp bucket, but the ones I have tend to leak and STINK! I could also get a jar with a rubber seal, but I'm concerned about it breaking if the auger hits it.

Anyone have any ideas?

The bait puck was my first thought. I would just salt your minnows and bring them in dead. They may not always work as good as live minnows but then again I've seen live minnows not work as good as salted.

Or just bring them in a bag . I salt mine to preserve extras I have from other trips. Ive never needed live bait to catch fish. Your prob jigging anyway so it wont matter.

I just noticed your first post (ski to spots on local lakes). I had Thought you were going deep in the bwca. One of the biggest reasons I salt the minnows is so they dont freeze.


Sounds like a good idea the jar you found. I was thinking a nelgene might work. The only problem is the mouth isnt wide enough to get your hand in to catch the slippery buggers.

Thanks to both of you.


I actually found a sealable glass jar w/a rubber gasket at home that I'm probably going to try out. I'm just going to wrap it up real well with a couple layers of duct tape. I'll probably also try salting some up and see how it goes.

just get one of those .99$ fish nets from petsmart. bent the net wire so you can fit it in the jar.
