We will be heading into Ester, South Arm of knife, Ottertrack area around the end of June with 6 middle school boys and the other chaperone and am wondering about Rabbit lake info...

1- Has anyone fished it, good or bad? Is it worth out time, and how is the portage in?

2- We have heard it has nice Lake Trout but that is about it. Sounds odd there wouldnt be decent smallmouth, seems like all most all of those lakes in that area (which i have fished before) have good smallmouth.

3- any info you have would be good.

Rabbit sits high above Ester.....the portage in is basically UP. There are a couple decent sites. Fished it mid summer...no SMB and the LT were deep and not biting. Ester would be a better fishing lake at the end of June IMO.

That is what i have heard about the smallmouth in Rabbit...seems strange that all you will find is Lakers... is it worth the trip? Doesnt sound like the portage in is easy. Up hill most of the way. The other option is just fish on Ester...that will be our 1st campsite of the trip, hopefully the Island site, the north or south site (depending on temperature).


Any other reports on Rabbit or on Ester for that matter? I have had luck with lots of small to ok smallmouth on Ester but nothing over 16. How are the Lakers or Walleye?

Anyone else have any more info on Rabbit Lake? Looks like a nice destination off the beaten path. Can anyone else confirm that the campsites are habitable? The maps page lists the NE campsite as small and rocky.

Campsites are habitable..........the lake does have smallies, but not a lot. It DEFINITELY has lakers. I have caught them every time I've gone there.

The NE campsite is small and rocky, but you can get 3 tents on it.

That is crazy, this is an old Message I posted. Funny thing is I have still never actually made it to Rabbit but THIS year it is a plan. We will stay on Ester hopefully and then portage over and daytrip to Rabbit to try and get our 1st ever lakers.


We will be on Rabbit either on the way in on June 17th or way out on the 20th depending on weather and such.


The portage is only 15 rods so even if it is straight up im not to worried.


Little cleos, other spoons and deep diving cranks are our plan. Never caught one before and hear they are small in Rabbit but we would just like to catch a couple and eat 1 or 2. That would be great.


How big do they have to be to keep? What is the best eating size?


Woodtick when are you going to be there? maybe we can help each other depending on who goes in first.

I realize my post is a full 9 years after the original question, but in case anyone stumbles across this thread...I spent a day in Rabbit Lake in early July 2019 and we caught about 30 smallies that day, but most of them were 10 inch yearlings that we left for you guys. We caught a few lunkers that ended up as our dinner that evening. The most productive site was a long rock face that runs along the long southeast shoreline (to your left as you come through the portage). The point directly northwest of the portage was also a good site, but the southwest wind we had that day made it hard to fish that point for more than a couple minutes at a time. We also caught one walleye but it was too small to keep. I'd definitely fish this lake again!

I was thinking of heading back there August of 2018 when my kids are hardy enough to handle the paddling & portaging needed to get there. So it looks like you might beat me there:)

Every SINGLE laker I have ever caught out of that lake has came from about 50-60ft using a chrome/blue husky jerk, or a clown husky jerk. I put a 1 or 2 oz lead weight 3ft in front of the husky and troll...works GREAT.

My daughter MadNat hooked a giant on Rabbit 3-4 years ago. We never saw it, but it nearly spooled her twice.

Another lake that is isolated and smallmouth bass have gotten into is new to me,but not surprising,those things are getting places I would never believe possible.


Lakers are small but fun.
