I was fishing on Lake Agnes last weekend and caught a small walleye that was completely red/orange and had a single spike on the top back corner of each gill plate, making it near impossible to not get stuck.
I've never encountered a walleye like that before and I was curious if it could have been a hybrid of some kind. If I get a picture of it from the other guy on the canoe I'll follow up with a post of it soon.

Sounds like you're descibing a jumbo perch, would love to see a picture .

The small spine on the top back corner of the gill plate is indicative of a sculpin but the color you describe is not. I suppose there could be some color variation due to the water color, but red/orange seems to be an EXTREME variation.

The fish was about 10 inches long. I'm not sure about the white tip, hopefully the pic will answer that question!
I've done some searching since the post and can't seem to find any answers. The more I think about this fish, the more confused I get. I almost want to go back up to Agnes and try and catch the little guy again just to make sure I'm not crazy!

There are sauger and saugeyes in Agnes. I have caught them. Pure saugers have no white tail but the saugeyes have characteristics of both. MN fish records. Scroll all the way down to the walleye-sauger hybrid. Quite a big fish.

yes there are Sauger/walleye hybrids. In-Fisherman did an article on this back in around 1990 or so.
I'm betting its a perch, although could be a sauger as they average much smaller than walleyes.
The 'barb' on the gill plate is the perch giveaway for me.

I've caught both walleye and saugers (and possibly saugeyes) in Agnes, but I'm betting perch.

I never have seen a walleye hybrid or heard of one except for a sauger and walleye could hybridize. We need a picture. How big was it? Did it have a white tip on its lower tail(if it had that it was a walleye)?
