CityFisher74: "Still have yet to get this to produce for me and I have given it at least 4 solid tries. Most recently this past weekend right below some rapids, casting up into them and reeling back with the current. I might have too long a distance between my Zulu and the swivel but other than that I am following it to a tee. And the spot was highly productive as I had caught 6 or 7 bass in the same location with a plan hook and leech under a slip bobber before right before throwing on the Zulu." These are jerkbaits (made of soft plastic) and will dart and flop everywhere when you twitch/rip/jerk them. It mimics a dying baitfish/minnow/etc and is difficult for bass to resist. A straight retrieve won't do you any good. You need to snap the rod tip to get a darting action. 1, 2, or 3 quick successive jerks, then a pause. Vary the number of jerks and the duration of the pause as you retrieve it back. If you're working it somewhat quick and not getting bit in fishy places, slow down to 1-2 jerks and a long pause. I too have not had any success on soft plastic jerkbaits like the ZToo or ShadZ but I had a blast with smallies, walleye, and pike on some hard jerkbaits the last couple weekends. It's all in the action - that darting dying fish action is irresistible to them. You may see them follow it as it darts around, give it one good long pause, and one medium twitch, and they'll lash out for it. It's super cool when you can see it happen! Best of luck! I'll be throwing some of these again this year with renewed hopes! |

Zulus and Shadz made from Elaztech are much better. I don't like the double Zulu rig it can get a little tangled at times. I do just fine with one. I'm not clear on the regulations in MN and Quetico, but I don't think it is legal to use this rig. |

Based on that, I am going to shorten my leader a bit as I've been closer to the 12-16 inch range. Then it is all up to my retrieve. I gotta get this figured out now I'm stubborn and just need to make it happen. |

I let the lure rise and break the surface. Then I reel in a few feet or move my rod tip a few feet. The lure will twitch and dive. Then, I stop and wait for the lure to break the surface again. And then the process starts all over again.. |

QueticoMike: I've caught monster smallies and pike with this rig. More 20 inch smallies than I can count and more than a handful of 40 inch pike. I will fish them until I find something better.....it's been over a decade and nothing comes close." Not doubting that at all based on your pics and stories. My experience with the Zulu rig comes down to lack of time on the water and not finding a way to get past the pesky hammer handles. I'm leaning towards bringing in 3 rods this year. So most likely one will be dedicated to this setup. |

HayRiverDrifter: "What lb line do you use for the leader and what lb line do you typically have on the reel? I use 10# Trilene XL on my reel and for the leader. I just put all of my ShadZ into small ziplock bags. You can mix colors together of ShadZ without any issue. I might put 10 or 12 into a sandwich baggie. Just don't mix them in with any other soft plastic lures. If they are stored separate in the original bag and not directly touching another soft plastic they will be fine. Never stored them outside of plastic bag, so I don't know what it would do to your plastic tackle box, probably nothing. I guess you could test it by putting one in the tackle box and see what happens. Or just wrap them in a a ziplock and then stuff them into a tackle box. Let me know if you have any other questions. |

It's the nearest thing there is to a real dying bait fish that I have ever seen, that is the trigger. I will be happy when the hard water is gone. I don't ice fish, so it's been since Dec. since I last fished, going nuts here with cabin fever just waiting and waiting and waiting :) |

Evidently its a real attraction for fish! I've seen some (including you, I think) mention pearl, smokey shad, and redbone colors. I also went for the shiner and strike king baby bass. Ever do well with these? They aren't all scented. They used to be smothered in garlic back in the day. I have caught fish on all of those colors. I lean more towards a gray and pearl color, but any variation of pearl seems to work up there. Sometimes you have to mix up the colors, but not too often. |

CityFisher74: "Thanks Mike. Tried this with no success last year but realized I was casting downstream and reeling against the current. I need to do the opposite." If you are fishing moving water and cast downstream you barely need to do anything but twitch it every now and then while the current gives the lure all the action. But you are right, if you are fishing current, cast upstream or an upward angle into the creek or river. If you haven't tried fishing this lure along shorelines or points or basically anywhere else, you should give it a try you might be pleasantly surprised. Let me know if you ever have any questions. |

I quickly slapped a swivel back on and then understood that the swivel falls faster than the lure and orientates the head of the lure downward which keeps it from popping to the surface. And as Mike has mentioned it looks for all the world like the Zulu is trying to eat the swivel (fish chasing prey) which I believe is a big time trigger. Don't leave the swivel off the set-up or it becomes very ordinary. Remember no stretch between the lure and swivel since it is such a short distance........I wouldn't go any less than 10b line and after several fish I would re-tie or at the minimum check the knots. |

Mad_Angler: "I did okay with Zulus last weekend. We actually did better a little better on the RaZor v. the ShadZ last year. Never used Bad Bass before, we always use Bad Shad and Redbone. The Redbone might have been the best of the two last year. Still hoping for a late season Quetico trip, but if worse comes to worse I will go to the Boundary Waters. Did you take any pictures? |
||

Mad_Angler: "Mike, Never used the 4 inch before, mostly use the 5 inch. I have used the 7 inch on several trips and caught some nice bass, but I didn't catch anything bigger than what I had been catching on the 5 inch lure. The first time I used the 7 inch lure thought for sure I was going to catch a monster bass and I hooked into a smallmouth after a handful of casts, but it was no monster, it was 14 inches. So a smallmouth will eat a bait half it's size ( or bigger ). I guess I need to start throwing 10 inch jerk baits....LOL. When I fish the 7 inch I will go with a 4/0 worm hook and use a size 5 ball bearing swivel and go a little deeper with the lure. ZMAN makes an 8 inch lure called StreakZ XL. |

Also, do you just store these in the bag they come in. You mentioned not to store them with other plastics. As long as they are in their original bag, can they be stored with other bags of plastics? Are they compatible with tackle box plastic, so you can store them directly in their own small tackle box? Just jumped in and bought hooks, swivels, and 4 colors of z mans. Heading to Boulder bay in May with plans to exercise this method extensively. Thanks |

Wally13: "QueticoMike, Most important is where you fish that time of the year. I concentrate more on moving water, top of falls where water is leaving the lake, rivers between lakes, and where the water flows into the next lake. I also fish areas that create current due to wind and land masses that are close together forming a channel\tunnel. I fish the Zulu\ShadZ in the same manner, with a size 4 ball bearing swivel to take the lure slightly deeper. I don't do any deep fishing during late August and early September. I find fish in 2 feet of water up to about 10 feet of water. If the Zulu\ShadZ isn't productive I will move to a green pumpkin tube in the same areas. I'm going to try black and blue tubes with blue skirts this year. I found a lot of craws with blueish \ violet colored pinchers in the areas I was fishing last year. Some big smallmouth can still be found on topwater during that time of the year on big flats 10 feet deep littered with boulders. A big lure such as a Lucky 13 in the Bullfrog color can be productive. Also I found the most productive times to be once the water warmed up in the morning and sunset is not as productive as the afternoons. This all depends on water temps, but this is what I have experienced. So I take my time getting out in the morning and I head in and eat dinner at sunset and get a fire ready to go. Days are short that time of the year and so is the best fishing window. |
||
Wally13 |
If you were fishing for smallies with your Zulu’s the last week of August and first week of September ... do you stick with sub surface presentation in early morning and sunset near shorelines or would Fish your Zulu’s deeper in the water column? At what water depth do you find smallmouth in early September during the day ? Last year on Jean Lake I caught most of my big ( 18-20 in) smallmouth bottom bouncing spinner rigs for walleye in about 25 -30 ft of water during the day. Your thoughts? |

quote DeanL: "Thanks for the pics Mike. Have you ever tried using the hooks with the spring locks or just worm hooks?" I just use the 1/0 worm hooks, never tried spring locks. If you do, let me know who they worked for you. I'm sure they would work fine for this set up. I think a lot of people like to use a larger hook, but I have had no issues with the small size. I like how the hook stays flush with the bait. I think the bigger hooks would like a keel sort of and take away some of the action. I have no proof of that, just the way I think about it. No matter how you rig a Zulu I'm sure you are going to catch fish if you use the right retrieve. |

To answer your question, the swivel is used to prevent all of the line twists and to sink the lure just below the surface. If you fish the lure without a swivel you better know how to remove line twists or be prepared to re-spool. The hook ratio is better fishing this lure at a subsurface level. When smallmouth attack a top water lure they sometimes miss the bait while trying to kill the thing. When the lure is below the surface they merely inhale the lure and not attack the lure creating a higher hook up ratio. I use just regular mono for the leader, Berkley XL most of the time. If I'm fishing a really rocky area that scrapes my line I will switch to fireline. |

CityFisher74: "This makes sense all, thank you. Perhaps I have been fishing in too quick of current. Maybe I need to be just off the current so it has time to come back slowly. Heading to Ensign next week I'll give it another go." Yeah, one issue with jerkbaits or slackline techniques in moving water, or when drifting towards your bait due to wind (in a canoe for example), is line management, when you're trying to get the action right. With jerkbaits you need enough slack in the line so that the bait never swims forward due to reeling, it always cuts/darts and then pauses and either suspends or very slowly rises/sinks. It's that darting action that is important, and you can only get it if you have the right amount of slack such that when you jerk the rod, your rod has a nice snap that takes up all the slack and jerks the lure. It's easy to see visually when you're doing it right. The problem is when moving water/wind adds slack line, you need to be able to reel it up but also still have the right amount of slack to work the jerkbait. That definitely adds to the challenge. I think you can definitely work a weightless (or swivel'd/Zulu-rigged) soft jerkbait near current, just not fast current. In faster current I would probably work it more aggressively to keep it moving and attracting attention, and only giving short pauses. I would fish it perpendicular to current as well if possible, so that as you retrieve it, it cuts across current. Bonus if you can pause it in an eddy - hard to imagine a fish that wouldn't eat something that stumbled into its eddy looking all dumb like a little baitfish flopping around the current. Good luck on Ensign! I'll be just a bit north of you in the Knife area. :) Going in on the 6th with a tow from Williams & Hall. |

quote GoSpursGo: "Bump - Using the QM Zulu method for the first time in about 30 days! I would highly suggest you add a #3 or 4 ball bearing swivel to this rig. It will add more weight for your cast if that is a concern. It also helps prevent the wicked line twists these lures can cause without one. It also take the lure below the surface. Hook up ratio seems to be better just below the surface. The swivel can also look like something the Zulu is chasing after to eat. To answer your question, you can fling it it a good distance. Buy ZMAN ShadZ, they slowly sink. They are made from ElaZtech and last 10 times longer than normal plastics such as flukes. ZMAN makes the ShadZ ( split tail ) the StreakZ ( single tail ) which is more buoyant than the ShadZ. ZMAN also makes these lures for Strike King who renames the ShadZ to Z Too and the StreakZ is renamed the Zulu. Best place I have found to purchase these lures on line is tacklewarehouse.com. If you want to read my article on Zulu fishing, send an email to - queticomike@yahoo.com and request the article. One more thing, you might as well test the lures at a local lake, pond or river to see how far they cast and how the presentation looks. Cast it out a few feet and then use a couple light twitches and pause to see how they work. Then make a cast and work it the same way you did next to shore. Don't twitch too hard or fast, it will cause the lure to swirl ( line twist ). Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck! Post some fish pics when you get back! |

Use about 8 to 12 inches for the line leader, no reason to go any longer than that. How quick is your retrieve? It needs to be worked very slowly. A couple of soft twitches followed by a long pause. Do you use a quality ball bearing swivel? Have you used a heavier #4 size? Is the lure moving correctly when you test it before casting? Throw the lure out a few feet and twitch it a couple of times to make sure you are getting the desired movement of the lure. Once you achieve the desired presentation next to shore, cast it out and work it back the same way. Just imagine during your retrieve what it looked like next to shore. Can you pre-rig the Zulu onto the hook/leader/swivel ahead of time and keep it in the bag? Or would that deteriorate the fishing line too much? Sorry, this is the first time I saw this question. I have pre-rigged one rig and put it into a baggie a couple weeks before a trip and stored in my hip sack. I do this for the first lure I tie on for each trip so I don't have to spend time putting together the rig at the first spot and I don't have to dig all the tackle out of my back pack to start fishing. Never had an issue with the fishing line deteriorating. Actually never gave it any thought, but it is a good question. |

flytyer: "Just read QM's article last night. Gotta try this. Looking at Zmanfishing.com website I cannot locate QM's recommended bait." I hope the Zulu rig gets you on some big fish this year. Let me know if you have any questions. I have a new article coming out in the Spring or Summer issue of the BWJ about revisiting the first article (Zulu Magic) and updating everyone on new tips and tricks with the Zulu rig. Got this one on the Zulu rig on the last day of my last trip to the BW last year...... |

My stock is a little depleted. What is the preferred color and style now? I liked the Razor in Bad Bass |

Mad_Angler: "Sorry Mike. The pictures were on my wife's phone. I tried looking for the Bad Bass color and couldn't find it. Maybe you meant to say you were throwing the Bad Shad? |

quote Dilligaf0220: "What am I missing with that rigging, looks like a Texas rig rigged in reverse? It's basically a Texas rig with a line leader and swivel. The hook is not rigged off center and you don't want this lure to spin. You want to work the lure in a sub-surface finesse manner, walking the dog with short twitches and pausing of the lure. The lure looks like a dying, fluttering bait fish that fish can not ignore. |

quote PompousPilot1: "Is it safe to assume one could use this same set up with Senkos also?" Yes, I plan on rigging up both Texas and Carolina style Senko Worms. |

Or is the hook rigged off centre to give it some spin? |

quote pastorjsackett: "I was wondering too....is it a florocarbon leader on the end of a superline or braid??? I have probably helped a lot of people catch fish over the years. I try to help people as much as possible and maybe they will experience better fishing up in the woods or at home waters. I wish I received a cut of all the Zulu sales I created for Strike King. :-) |

Mike, why the swivel? Prevent line twist....a little weight out front...or? Heavier fluoro or something to act as a partial leader? Seems like one more thing to need in the box (although very small), more knots, more thing for the fish to see, etc. |

Another suggestion: use wacky rigged senko-style baits for comparison. They cast better, sink better and are easier to use, which is why they became more popular than slug baits. ymmv |

quote mapsguy1955: "Have you tried the RT Slug? A Mister Twister plastic... " No, never heard of the RT Slug. Zulus work just fine for me. The only thing that could make Zulus better would be if I could catch over a 100 fish on one instead of 50. |

early-mid September? Seems like the fish are deeper then. Do you add weight above the swivel or above the Zulu? |
||
joetrain |
quote Whitaker: "Has anyone had much success on the Zulu rig later in the season, say I have been fishing this zulu set up on a carolina rig which uses a sliding weight. The lakes I have been fishing do not have a lot of rocks so it is snag free. I fish it along weedlines and wiggle it through the weed edges. It works great. ~JOE~ |

quote joetrain: "quote Whitaker: "Has anyone had much success on the Zulu rig later in the season, say There are several ways to get a Zulu deeper. One of the ways is how Joe described above. Or you could....... 1) Use a bigger swivel 2) Use a split shot about 18 inches up the line 3) Use a standard jig head ( action is different, but still works ) 4) Use a weighted worm hook |

Last Sept trip our crankbaits weren't too attractive to them as a rule, suspected they were deeper by then Thanks!! W |

quote dj00140: "I take it you fish the zulu/slug-o with only a swivel for just under the surface fishing in <6ft of water? What about walleyes in 12-22 ft of water? will this application will be effective? How do you get it deep and how do you fish it?" If you want to fish deep, you can either add a split shot, a three way rig, a weighted hook, or a simple lead head jig. I don't typically fish this lure deep. Probably caught 50 or more walleyes last year on this lure without weight added. Fishing moving water in early spring. |

quote jungro: "I brought the Zoom Super Flukes with me to Florida this year and just hammered the snook on them -- would not have heard about them without BWCA messageboard and QueticoMike. Thanks! Glad to hear I could help, I have never fished for snook with a Zulu, but if I get a chance to go again I will give it a try. When I snook fished I always used a YoZuri blue and silver stick bait and retrieve it extremely slow. Tie it with a good loop knot and it creates a wobble better than a Rapala. |

I'm just thinking of ease of switching colors, etc... when out on the canoe. I'm excited to try it though! |

Thanks for the email yesterday. I enjoyed reading the Zulu / ZMan articles and plan to use the rig on my upcoming trip to Canada in early August. We won't be fishing Quetico / BWCA per se, but will be fishing the canoe area lake near Kenora, Ontario (Dogtooth and Rushing River Provincial Park areas) which are absolutely loaded with smallmouth, pike, and lake trout. I have enjoyed reading your articles, and plan to do some shopping for the Strike King / Zman shadz later this afternoon. Will post a trip report when I return home. Thanks for your willingness to share the information! |
