Fishing is better in Canada. Just decide how you want to get there.

My impression is this: Northern pike fishing is neutral. Small Mouth fishing I would say that Ely gets the nod. Walleye fishing is neutral with maybe Ely having more of the bigger lakes with big reps closer to it. Lake trout fishing definitely goes to Gunflint.

So with that said if I was looking for a May laker trip with walleye then I would do East side. I were looking for smallies and walleye I would look more to Ely. I like Sawbill because you can go in either direction from there.

chadwick1,

Not much difference fishing in either area.

American Point on Saganaga lake is approximately 160 miles from Ely by road and water.

I have made it from there to the Moose Lake parking lot next to LaTourelle's in 45 minutes by snowmobile when it was legal.

The areas are not that far apart when you compare entering at Moose Lake and/or the end of the Gunflint Trail.

Many lakes in between the two areas.

Ely is a beautiful area, so is the ride up the north shore and GF Trail.

You could start at one side, and exit at another. All you need is someone to move the vehicles, or have two groups starting at either end and take each others vehicles back.

Is'nt this more of lake by lake scenario. I've been leaning towards Grand Marais lately. Less folks
