This is probably too late, but I figured I'd add in my 2 cents for future trips and others that might read this post. We just got back from a trip and we had the bait shop put the minnow bag right in the bucket, then he added the water, minnows, and air right in there. It worked very well, as we didn't have any wasted space and we didn't have to worry about the bags breaking. We put the leech and crawler containers in the leech totes for transport. Because of the cool weather, we didn't need to worry about keeping the bait in a cooler, so this may not be the best idea if traveling during the hotter months.

I'm going in on the number chain next week. I've taken several BW trips, but haven't done much fishing while there. I'm curious how everyone carries their bait, and what type of live bait do you bring? I've thought of sticking to Gulp artificial bait to keep it simple, not sure what to do. Let me know what has or hasn't worked for you - thanks!

This is about the time I switch from Leeches to Minnows. What I do is transport them in a hard sided cooler. I leave them in the oxygenated bags until I get to my destination. After I arrive They are kept in the cooler with a change of water once a day. They are pretty easy to keep alive this time a year. If the weather is "warmer", and you can find Leeches it might be worth taking some. If the minnows seem to be to much of a pain, I would just take crawlers. For me they work as well as minnows this time of year. The Leeches I transport the same as minnows. The crawlers are just packed away in a pack and are very easy to keep.

Agree that you need to keep them in the bag until you reach your spot. We travel with the reels in the bait bucket to protect the reels and use the space in the minnow bucket. As soon as we get to where we're going, the minnows come out of the cooler, into the minnow bucket and into the water. We usually get the minnows the night before and they are fine so long as they stay cool.

I like crawlers. Lively fat ones. I take them in a 'bait canteen' or ? crawler crib ?. All sides a made of 'press board' which can be soaked with water and evaporative cooling takes over of you keep them in the shade and keep the sided damp. Works 5 days in early summer for me. I put 7 dozen in the shoebox size or 4 in the smaller cube size. Leeches are strictly the yellow 'bait king'leech bucket. I like the lid design. We make a mini version of this for stern or bow fisherman out of a plastic 'tang' or coolaid container with a few small holes on top and a cord with a knot inside. Minnows......only if motorboating with an aerator.
