I have also caught them up there. Here is one a friend caught on Lake Four.

A long time ago I think Crooked was considered a good Largemouth lake. The end of Gardner bay leading to the Newts used to full of them, but after the smallmouth got stocked they seem to have declined. They are still present in many lakes though, just not in big numbers. If you find some lakes that are isolated, that were never stocked with smallys then you will find good populations of Largemouth, Fisher lake in the BWCAW comes to mind. Quetico has more of them though.

I caught a Largemouth in Crooked near Friday bay last June. I was very surprised. It was probably just under 2lbs.

Indeed........caught a #4 on American point in Basswood 20ft down on a big crank bait. Seen one pushing 5lbs on that small unnamed lake inside Kings point when I drifted into a pocket of pads........and after coming off the Memory Lane Portages into Conmee one August I came across 2 very fine specimens while getting ready to put the boat in the water. It was then, as I looked at all the trees in the water, that I decided a Largemouth trip must happen some day........it looked like it might be a lot of fun dropping worms and jigs into those treetops.

And the biggest largemouth I have seen outside of Florida was in the Darky River just before Darky Lake, a true Behemoth!

Yes, there's Largemouths everywhere. There was a time in regs. that you must
release Largemouths, but then when populations grew, the DNR removed that stipulation.

Anyone on here fished Crooked and caught Largemouth? I ask because two years ago when I took my then ten year old up through LBF on our way to Table Rock we stayed at a sight and the first fish turned out to be a 4# Largemouth. I thought this was very odd for Crooked Lake...it was first and last largemouth. We are Hoosiers so Largemouth are not a big deal to us but it lit him up after a very long day.
