For other folks looking for a waterproof day pack; check out Simms Dry Creek backpack. A little pricey; but Simms makes good stuff.

As the stern paddler, I keep my day pack behind the seat, where often it sits in some water. In this I keep rain gear handy, a layer if it gets cold, water, snacks, first aid kit... So I'm looking for a water proof pack that also meets the following requirements: 1. Has a chest strap 2. Has zippered pocket/s, preferably inside the pack, where I can place wallet, car keys, other essentials, securely. Wandered all over Canoecopia looking for this, w/o success. I've found one pack that almost gets there made by Seattle Sports; but lacks a zippered pocket of any kind. Seattle Sports Aquaknot Many packs are water resistant, but sitting in water, that doesn't quite make it.
Am I the only one trying to figure this out?
If I can't find anything, I'll just use the NickWash water repellent tx again on my old REI day pack (has lots of zippered compartments), and hope for best (as I tromp around again in Wabakimi in a few weeks).

I use a Kondos day pack with a trash bag liner to it to keep the items inside dry. It has two side pockets that each fit 2 Nalgene water bottles in them and then has a front pocket for small items. NRS makes some dry bag type bags that may work for you although they don't have any exterior pockets to them.

Like OldFringers I use a daypack with assorted small waterproof stuff sacks inside. I have been using this system for years Dave and never seem to have any problems with dying out my nylon daypack.

CCS Rucksack with a small packliner. Nothing gets wet, and I use the pack for hiking as well.

I've always used dry bags/dry day packs. I've never come across multi-compartment dry bags. You could always use a small bag/pouch to keep the small stuff handy and separate within a larger dry day bag. I usually just throw my keys in the bottom--never see the light of day (or any water) until I'm through with the trip.

Use any pack that fits you correctly and put a small waterproof seal line inside.

I have a Seattle Sports Aquaknot and have used it many times as my canoe camping daypack. It works great for this. But I also have used a CCS Rucksack with a waterproof liner inside. Probably more the CCS setup in the past 5 years than the Aquaknot. It holds more and has a top flap pocket for things I want to get at quickly.

I haven't tried it myself for this. But for a day pack, maybe a two gallon heavy ziplock bag for a liner. I've used them in the past and worked well for other things.

I used the Seattle pack year before last. The harness came unattached at the top where it was held on by a piece of rubber. Had to use duct tape to hold it together. It didn't carry very well, not comfortable. But, it did keep everything dry.
A friend of mine just bought the Grundens Gage Rum Runner pack. Might be an option for you.

I use either a Frost River Summit expedition pack or Duluth rambler pack with a liner. A bit heavier but looks great. The straps on the FR summit feel very comfortable to me. It does have a zippered front compartment and two side water holders. JerryG

Like the others, I use a CCS bushcrafter with a hvy mil poly liner + I use ul dry bags for things I really care about like lunch, first aid kit, emergency repair/survival kit and in reach. It’s big enough all our fishing tackle stays in it as well. Makes day fishing trips super easy and organized. Just put lunch in the bushcrafter and we’re good to go for the day. Double dry and durable.

Osprey Talon 22 best day pack ever. Life time no questions asked warranty. If they can't fix it they replace it. Like others said, just stick a dry stuff sack in it. Much cheaper to replace a stuff sack than a waterproof pack if it gets a hole.

What do you guys use for liners? I saw some pack liners on gossamer gear that looked promising. Wondering if there's anything that works better than just a small trash bag...

If you choose a waterproof bag over a dry bag, I'd suggest the pack liner not just as an added defence against stuff getting wet, but to help the pack float longer if you should tip. The trapped air will keep it boyant for a very long time. Hate to think of your keys and wallet sinking.

I use a cut down contractor grade trash bag of compactor trash bag. They are thicker and hold up well. Use a new one each trip. Use the old ones for trash.

Unfortunately this post has me convinced I need a new daypack. Really intrigued by the Mountain Hardwear Scrambler 30 OutDry Backpack. I know you guys seem to like the liners, but if there’s a bag that’s already waterproof, seems like a more convenient solution.

Thanks all for the informative discussion, and to Boonie for suggesting the Exped Torrent 20; the one pack that meets all my criteria. It might be a little narrow, but 20 liter capacity should be enough. I like all the pockets and the heavy duty waterproof feature. I've ordered this online from Summit Hut in Tucson-only retail outlet I could find, and will report back in a few days after I receive this.

They make a larger one, Dave, if that's not big enough, you could get a 30L one.

Received the Exped Torrent 20 yesterday.
Nice day pack. Worked good for 6 mile day hike. Straps & pads could be a bit longer.

I use the granite gear slacker packer drysack for this purpose. It has a 25L capacity and weighs only five ounces. I am very careful about weight and space with my gear and this pack rolls up into a very small package when not in use.

Update: Tried out the Exped Torrent 30 yesterday at local outdoors store in Portland. It fits me better, has longer straps. Doesn't have the outside zip pocket, but does have two smaller inside pouches, one with a zipper, that at least can hold a wallet & car keys.
So the wife gets the Torrent 20 and I'll have the Torrent 30--for upcoming canoe trips. Nice and waterproof.

I use the DryCASE 30L Waterproof Backpack. It fits all of the criteria the OP stated. Fully waterproof, small zipper pocket on the inside. I like the mesh in the back for storing fishing utensils bug spray etc.
Here is a video review I made of the DryCASE Waterproof Backpack

Thanks Blatz for suggesting such a fine pack. I don’t need it but want it based simply because of all the features!
I use a CCS rucksack as my daypack since it’s along for the trip as my food pack.

The north face
I have a North Face Dry bag that is kind of similar to this one, this one has what you are looking for except the chest strap. Mine is an older version & has the chest strap & a waffle foam padded insert along where your back/spine would be along with a mesh outer pocket on the outside. It does not have the inner pocket, I use a small dry bag inside for keys, ID, etc. I looked for it online, but they don't make it any more. The exped torrent 20 boonie posted is the closest thing to mine.
