I am feeling better and better. I don't mind this if it is just a visual thing. I was more concerned that that area might fail and I would have a big hole or tear in the mesh. I know heat will make things brittle and I can't tell if this was heat or a machine pulling it when it was sewn together.

I've experienced the same mesh distortion on a number of tents. Off the top of my head, I have this on my Nemo Losi 3, my Marmot Limelight 2 and my older three person REI. I have used all of these tents extensively and have had zero issues with the mesh.
In fact, my friend called me last night with the same concern. He set up his new REI 3+ and was very concerned about the mesh distortion.
I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I was all excited, I just received my new Half Dome 4 and got a break last night with no rain and dry grass so I set it up to give it the once over. I noticed that every mesh panel (lots of mesh) had areas that look melted a little or deformed in the mesh pattern. See photo's. I sent REI an email this morning. My question is this... Is it normal to have them due to the manufacturing process? Is this something I need to worry about long term, if it is a failure point for early failure? My initial reaction was just to return it and have another sent but if this is normal am I just going to get another like it? Anyone have one of these and do you see these in yours?

as a follow up I didn't state that it isn't just one or two of these but one or two in every panel with some of these being half an inch long. I had a couple other photo's but it stopped uploading them due to site maintenance. :)

I have the same tent. I got mine ... about 7 years ago. I believe mine has always had that as well and I have never had any issues. I can unroll it after work if you want me to be certain or if no one else responds. It doesn't take long and I probably should make sure it has my stuff in it for my upcoming trip.

Bought the same tent for last season, I've seen a few areas that look similar to what you posted, no issues. I'd forget about it and enjoy!

I am hoping they are just normal and won't effect anything. Other than this question I really like the tent. Your post has me feeling a little relieved.

What you are seeing is just distortion of the mesh from packing. The individual fibers are strained together. It won't affect the mesh (shouldn't anyway). If the gaps between the fibers get too large, it could let is some no-see-ums.

I have purchased various high-end brands of tents that have this same issue. I have seen it on new tents, or after a few uses. I chalked it up to the way I folded it or put it in a stuff sack on a trip. It doesn't appear to be damaged and it stills serves its' intended purpose. I wouldn't worry.

If it bothers you enough, you could use a pin to gently put the weave back where it's supposed to be. As others have stated, it's typically from packing/setup/teardown where poles bang around or perhaps the mesh gets deformed around something hard like a pole clip.

I have a Half Dome 2 plus with the same (blemish) in a couple of panels. I have had mine since 2013 with no issues.

I feel pretty good now I have been asking around about this. It might let in a no-see-um on maybe one or two of them but I can deal with that. I was afraid I would have a hole as big or bigger than a quarter. Sounds like this isn't an issue. I can't wait to get out overnight in it now. Thank you!

I have heard enough I am not worried about it any longer. The look of it didn't bother me but I was thinking if it deformed from heat in manufacturing then the mesh would be brittle. I am glad to hear that isn't the case and I don't have to worry about a bunch of one inch diameter holes popping up all over. I already have this in a pack for a camping trip we are taking next week. Thank you all for sharing your experience with this.
