There is something about the old fashioned collapsible directional antenna, it has never let me down.

+4. Have not been to Q but I got one last August and it worked very well just a couple miles south. Had 3 alerts of severe weather during that week - very helpful and easy to use.

For those that like the CC Pocket, do you have the WX Pocket ($60) or the Skywave Pocket ($90)? Or were the model names/ configurations different in the past?
Anyone have experience with the combo solar / hand crank version? Seems intriguing, but odd that the solar version is the least cost and wondering if it sacrifices some performance.

It's what I use and it's all I need. The small pelican case fits perfectly for this radio.

I have the cheaper WX model. I don't know how it compares as far as receiving stations; all I want it to do is give me a forecast once or twice a day, and wake me up at night if things turn bad. It does those.
Not sure of the benefit of solar or crank except for extended trips, like +30 days. Not sure it would matter for shorter trips. Might be helpful for some people around home. I have family members who always have lots of batteries around the house, but the only ones that work are in the TV/game controller. They could probably use a hand crank.

C Crane CC WX Pocket Radio works great.
Gets great AM/FM reception in addition to weather stations.
Listening to Cardinal baseball on KMOX after 9:00 PM in the Quetico is a great way to end your day.

Does anyone know if replacing the flexible wire antenna on my CC Crane pocket radio with a different antenna would help pull in stations better? I was able to get WELY out of Ely at Trails End Campground but not on Sea Gull or Saganaga Lakes. NOAA comes in great everywhere.

Ditto. I also got a Bose Wave antenna that stores in the same case and improves reception greatly.

CC Pocket here. I used my CC on my 27 day solo and only used one set of AA batteries. I used it way more than I thought I would. Maybe 10-20 minutes a day averaged out. Great radio can't think of one thing I don't like about it.

I have a cheap one but it is fine... You just might have to walk around a bit to find a signal. I pick up Atikokan in Northern Q

I've used this radio throughout the BW and Q. Have always got good reception.

We just use a pair of Midland GXT800 radios. Either used as walkie talkies or switched over to weather and scroll through those stations. They've worked on all our BW trips but there are some spots where you have to get to a higher spot or hold it a certain way to get reception good enough to understand the robo-man. Usually it seemed like either channel 6 or 7 worked best for us lately.
I'd guess going into the Q it would be harder to get signal? (assuming the Canadians don't have their own stations sending out the same info?)

Environment Canada has many weather stations.. There is one difference.. The reports go on forever as they have to do them in both English and French
Atikokan is good for Q, weather permitting. I have never depended on a weather radio but carry one because it can be useful if there is a station in range. My US weather radio works in Canada. My radio is an ICOMM M24 which is a marine radio ( as I kayak in the ocean I use it for safety messaging as well as SOS or pom pom . Inland canoeists won't need something like that)

What brand of weather radio do you guys use, if any? I have taken one into Quetico before, but couldn’t get reception on it. Is this the norm or are there some that will work there?

I have the Crane Skywave. It pulled in weather reports and National Public Radio when I was on McAree June 5 thru 11, 2019. Got it at REI for $90. I’m very happy with it. Nice to have weather forecasts when you’re in the wild.
