We had friends years ago that had one. They lived in the UP and I believe Laurie and Tom said the manufacturer was near them? They said it was a small, mom & pop type operation. The thing I remember is it seemed heavier than a comparable sized Wenonah or Mad River 'glass boat. We paddled with them on the Wisconsin River and the first time, we let them use our Mad River Revelation since they had their daughter and we paddled their Hoefgen. Seemed a bit cramped, but we had a cooler and 5gal water too.
The second time they paddled it with their daughter and lots of gear. That's the only pic I can find. It was a decent canoe if you don't plan on portaging it very far. The Wenonah Adirondack was a "Speedster" in comparison, though.

I tripped with a couple that had one. This was about 20 years ago. If I recall, it was a very small company in the UP of Michigan. The canoe had a traditional look to it with upswept ends. I remember it being a very good quality canoe. It seemed to paddle well.

Thanks for the input. We're looking at one and are mainly going to use it in the boundary waters and TC lakes, and occasionally on Lake Huron on calm days (we visit family in MI). Hopefully it fits the bill.

Hi, I'm new to posting on the forum but have gotten a lot of good info from other posters when planning BWCA trips.
Anyway, I'm looking into a Hoefgen canoe I found for sale, but am unfamiliar with the company. I was curious if anyone has any experience with them, and if so, what the verdict is on them.

Hoefgen Canoes were (and appear to be still are) located in Menominee, MI, roughly an hour north of Green Bay, WI. A quick Google search found their website here.

I have had an 18' Hoefgen since 1999. I love this boat. My wife is from Marinette and I used to drive by this shop on my way to a golf tournament north of Menomonee on the bay every year. One day I stopped in an ordered one. Paul the manufacture and his wife delivered it to us at Conoecopia. We were living in Brodhead WI at the time. The boat can carry 1000 pounds and is extremely stable and fast. The only drawback is it is 65 pounds but I can still portage it with ease. They are not actively making boats but I just had mine in by him to fix some chips in the front stem. I believe he will still make a boat on order if you want. He had a new one in the shop that he said was for his niece.
