They would work.
I'd rather setup with no obstruction at all and the tarp high enough to facilitate walking under easily. I also like to paddle around camp some so I'd loose the supports for the time out.

THEGrandRapids: "Does anyone use their paddles to keep a corner or two up on their tarp? I have a CCS 10x14 and have started to use the paddle in the middle - the straps in the middle work really well to "tie" the paddle grip in... but the corners are a little trickier. Anyone do this? Pictures?

We typically sit on low chairs or on the ground under the tarp so a 50" paddle would give us a pretty good view. I run a ridgeline lengthwise (in conjunction with the CCS ridgeline stuff sack).

I may start bring a couple extra tent poles to run the corners up, but for now I'd like to use the paddles."

Slightly different application, slightly longer paddles.

Stay with me on this, it's hard to explain without showing what I mean.

Do no put the paddle under the tarp corner. Tie a rope to the corner and then put the paddle a few inches, 2-3, away from the tarp. Wrap the rope around the paddle once or twice and then pull the rope and stake it out a couple of feet from the paddle in the ground. This will keep the wind from raising your tarp off the paddle, the paddle falling down, and the tarp sitting in your lap.

(edit) I see OCDAVE put a picture of what I mean up while I was typing. You can also use a stick rather than a paddle. We all love playing with sticks!

They work great until you want to go out fishing or get fresh water. Then you are up the creek without a paddle.

I don't have pictures, but I have done this before. It can be tricky to get the rope tied on the paddle and staked out so that it is stable. If I'm going somewhere I think might be a challenge for finding trees to tie out, I take these trekking pole cups. I haven't tried them with a paddle, but I think they will work.
