Made a few of the fabric part for a canoe tump. Used one on a friend Grumman- Works but would take a while to get used to

I've considered trying it too. But if I was tumping the canoe, I wouldn't be able to carry a canoe pack too, so I never tried it. Here is a link to worth looking at.

I tried a tump on the canoe 50 years ago and didn't care for it. This was at a time in my life that I carried the pack with just a tump line. I used to practice during the winter for Spring trips. The muscles in my neck developed like you wouldn't believe! I did cross paddles somewhere with a Canadian on a portage that used one on his canoe. He was very comfortable with his. This was in the day before Kevlar canoes. I can't see any great advantage in using one with a lightweight canoe.

I had one on my canoe for a couple years and it really did transfer weight off my shoulders during a portage. You need to ensure that the cords holding the tump to the gunwales are strong and secure as they carry a lot of load. The tump also makes a great storage spot when fishing to keep items off the floor of the canoe.

The picture is on page 69 of Cliff Jacobson's "Canoeing Wild Rivers," fifth edition. He gives several details on making and using the "trampoline tump." Cliff also shows a slightly different one on page 29 of "Canoeing and Camping: Beyond the Basics."
I have a couple of canoes, without yokes, I just set on my head to portage up to a quarter mile to the car. However, if I was to do real portages, I think I would want to portage around town and build up my neck muscles before hand.

Just wondering if anyone has used or made a canoe-carrying tump line? One of the grandkids is thinking of making one - I am afraid it will just give him neck injury or strain issues.  Found this photo on-line. Ideas???
