You can find all sorts of options from suppliers like US Plastic, The Cary Company, Berlin Packaging. Get something in polyethylene, not PET. PET won't last. LDPE (low density polyethylene) if you want to squeeze the bottle. HDPE (high density polyethylene) or polycarbonate for something sturdier like a spray bottle or for packing/pouring.

P.S. Nalgene is just a brand, but the hard plastic bottles most people associate with Nalgene are polycarbonate.

I use high density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles that I found at a local REI. Wide-mouth in 4 and 8 ounces and small HDPE bottles with dropper caps. I keep them in zip lock bags in case of leaks from caps.

If you cannot find film canisters, the test strip containers used by diabetics works very well. The cover even remains connected to the container after it's open. My wife is a diabetic and she goes through about 20 every year.

This forum never lets me down! I always thought of pill btls. as those hard plastic things with the impossible lids-- I now have 6 bottles about 4 ounces that will work great for dry or semi dry (pb and j). Will order liquid holders on line.
While shopping on line I came across hvy duty zipper bags that claimed to be scent proof. I got the impression they were to be used to carry herbs on airplanes ?!? ( gotta protect your basil from TSA sniffer dogs I guess) That aside a scent proof baggie would be nice as added protection for the food pack. Any ideas?

thanks again, merlyn

I go thru a goodly amount of Mio and Kool-Aid in similar bottles. Have a bunch and use them for stove priming alcohol, soap, oil, and other things camping and around the garage. If any one wants some just let me know.

Try polyethylene bottles (e.g. Nalgene). They come in lots of sizes . For wine, I use Platypus. Polyethylene bottles

I would like some suggestions on containers for things like dish soap, pancake syrup or cooking oil, etc. Things that we buy in bulk or come in glass, but only need a few ounces for a camping trip.

I have used those lite plastic tubes from Wally World found by the travel stuff, but they are awful flimsy. I also use some old plastic film containers, but they are getting harder to find. Ziplock bags of course, but I would really like something re-useable.

Thanks... Merlyn

Belgiancurve, no problem, I had never heard of that before. Great idea and thanks for the link rdgbwca. I looked but didn't find any measurements or volume size. Do you know what it is off hand?

I think what belgiancurve22 is referring to are the test tube shaped plastic containers that become 2 liter soda bottles.

Here is an example.

deancamp: "At the risk of sounding ignorant, what is a soda bottle preform?"They are pop bottles before they blow them up to full size, they are the size of a test tube. Super strong and they don’t leak, I got them on amazon

I have found small (about the size of a deck of cards) syrup containers at Wal-Mart. I believe it's the Aunt Jemima brand???

Are presciption pill bottles liquid tight? I'd be concerned packing PB into one and then having peanut oil leech out. Using them for spices is a great idea. I'm going to start saving them for that.

If you get any prescriptions from the pharmacy most of the containers are waterproof and work great for soap, syrup or other liquids. When I got prescriptions filled I told the pharmacist the reason and asked for bigger prescription bottles he was happy to to do it.

That's a good suggestion. Next time we need to get amox for an ear or strep infection I'll try to keep the bottles when we're done for that kind of stuff....

I’ve been using pill bottles for shampoo and liquid soap, dish soap etc for years on vacation have never had any problems. Test one full of water upside down or on its side on the counter overnight if it’s dry in the morning you have a good one.

I save my used Kool-Aid and Mio Water drink mix containers. Peel the plastic wrapper off and the cap twists right off. I use them for dish soap, bleach, catsup, mustard, steak sauce, sunscreen, etc.

We use the nalgene travel containers. Pick up a medium travel kit and you’ll have plenty of options for spices, oil, syrup etc.. depending on your needs for each trip.

Yep. That's what I use. I also use multivitamin bottles. Prescription bottles for spices. Plastic peanut butter jars.
