Thanks for all the ideas. I have been using the Kondos Harness and while it has been good the barrel just sits too far back. Looking to give the Nimbus Core a try.

Ursaks seem to be a top choice and will look at using them together.

I have checked this site and there is some stuff on it but I am looking for other options. I have been going to the BDub for about 18 years and have always used barrels but I really am not happy with how they carry, it always feels like it is going to tip you over on tough portages. I like not hanging a pack but I am willing to do so. I know and I am in that crowd, canoe gear for canoeing, but looking for options. We also really simplified our menu with basically boil water for breakfast and supper.

I was thinking of a something like ULA pack with a couple bear vaults or even just separate dry bags in the pack. Anyone come up with options, traveling light is a must.

that core maybe an option PM sent. thanks for responses. The more I go the more I look to go lighter and refine and this has seemed to be a sticking point for me.

The BearVaults and Ursacks will carry just fine in about any pack. Mine just go in my regular pack with everything else.

If traveling light is a must than nothing beats the Ursack. Started with a barrel vault, now I own two Ursacks and will never go back.

Two BearVault 500's fit nicely in a CCS Bushcrafter. There is plenty of room for your fuel, stove, and cooking vessels in it as well. I put the utensil pack in the top flap. It's usually our small pack and can be carried with the canoe if you are single portaging.

I have two Nimbus Core packs small and regular no longer made. Designed to use with bear canisters in a fully adjustable internal frame.

They have been in the For Sale section a few times currently unused. Interested? just E-mail me for details.

I typically just use an ursack and have never had a problem. Tie it chest height around a tree and you're done.

My two Bear Vault 500s fit side by side in my #2 Duluth pack. I put my old Crazy Creek pad chair in the back for a bit of cushion. Room on top for my tent, tarp and maybe a little more.

There are a few harnesses for barrels these days that are quite nice.
Don't give up on them yet.

The Ursack is in the black water proof stuff sack. It goes in my main pack during portages. I'll transfer other stuff into it when food supply goes down. This is used to trim the solo canoe, with the stuff sack going into the bow area.
