I picked this trailer up off craigslist last year. I wanted something for canoes but also bikes/gear and utility use. Ideally an aluminum cargo trailer would have been ideal but not in the budget at the time.

It is a basic cargo trailer, 5x8 I think with a standard tongue. The racking is Unastrut. I'll be moving up the lower rack for more bike clearance. Yes, these 16 foot solos hange off the back, I just hang a red (orange) flag off the back and I'm compliant. I have had a MN 3 and Spirit 2 on this as well with zero issue again hanging a flag and or light.

We moved last summer (same town, NE Metro of Minneapolis) and I wanted to be on a lake. Well, no lake but having the trailer is almost as good. I can walk out the door, open the garage and be hooked up in less than 5 min and on the water in another 10. It is just so slick to have the boats already racked up and ready to go.

This suits my needs 100%. I looked at the Space Trailer/sport trailer sector and those didn't suite my wider needs like bikes and 2-canoes at one time.

UPBoy: "I converted a Harbor Freight trailer to carry 2 canoes and lots of gear. Made a wooden box with two supports on the front and back. No welding. The trailer also serves as a small utility trailer to haul things around. I used all treated lumber and it is holding up well.

I also converted the tung to convert from short to long depending on how I want to use the trailer. I have about $460 invested. Email me if you would like to see some photos.

How long are your canoes? Think you could haul a 17’?

Hi everyone!

I am looking to get information on individuals who transport their canoe using a trailer. What kind of trailer do you use?

We also have a Space Trailer. Longer tongue and the top rack. I call it my detachable pickup bed, but it’s even more than that with the cover and canoe hauling. Even my wife’s 4-cylinder Subaru barely knows it’s there except in a cross wind with canoes on top.

I also would love to purchase a Remackle trailer, maybe next year. $4k is a lot of money for me, but not for a well built utility trailer, that happens to double as an excellent canoe trailer.

As a plug for the person selling one in the Items for Sale or Wanted section: I have a SportsRig micro trailer and it rides very smoothly. I think you can rig them up for more boats. But if you can find a serviceable boat trailer and rig up a rack you can put something together for less.

As a kid in scouts, we converted an old donated popup camper frame into a canoe trailer. We built it to haul 8 canoes. Took some work but was done on the cheap and turned out great. We had used it to travel from VA up to Algonquin and Main.

Not the most inexpensive option, but I use a space trailer and consider it a very useful option. You get what you paid for, they certainly aren't over-priced for what it is. I would consider this the Cadillac option to haul 2 canoes, I'm sure you could ask them to make a 4 place rack for the top if you needed that.

It has the advantage of also hauling cargo. Waterproof ('ish), very well made, pulls great, and useful for family trips of all sorts, hockey trips, family Christmas to the grandparents, hauling bikes (I can fit 5 on top), etc. Very happy with it, don't regret the purchase price at all. You get a lot of "Nice Trailer" comments.

I use a 10’ Bear Track aluminum cargo trailer with two 2x10 wood cross braces. The cross braces sit right on top of the high side rails. I’ve hauled two 17’ Grumman canoes on it, my kevlar canoes, even my Grumman Sportboat. I clamp the outboard onto the wood cross brace. All my gear goes in the trailer. I can also use it as a utility trailer when I’m not hauling gear so it serves many uses. It’s the most useful thing I’ve ever owned. Specialty canoe trailers serve their purpose but if you have the budget for one trailer, it’s nice to have a do it all trailer.

Remackel trailers are the nicest I’ve seen and they are built to spec. They are very heavy duty, weigh a lot and are built from steel. They aren’t cheap but it would last a lifetime.

I like the idea of a trailer with a lighter suspension like the sports rig or a yakima for carrying lighter boats like canoes. The one in the for sale section looks like a bargain at $800. There is a Yakima listed on craigslist near me for $2000.

I did the same, but with some supplies from work I luckily only have about $300 into it.

I picked up a retired electrician's trailer I found on FB Marketplace for $350 - has four top-opening lids, but the whole inside of the trailer is open with just two little built in toolboxes. I added a longer, carpet covered crossbar so that two canoes fit easily on top. I can also get two canoes/kayaks on top of the compartments. I'm working on waterproofing it better, which is why it's covered with a tarp. It is fantastic to put all of our packed bags, life jackets, paddles, etc in. At rest stops we open it up to get into the cooler. Can lock it up as well. It was originally an old coleman pop up trailer.

We spent the big bucks and went with a Space Trailer. We bought one early on for a show price after seeing a ST at cabin-outdoor show in Minneapolis.

I have had great service from the Space Trailer folks. We did a refurbish and changed out the tires (13 to 15 inch), tongue (longer) , bars (wider) to make it more usable. We had an issue with the top and ST took care of at no cost.

We have taken it on thousands of miles of hard top and gravel roads. Big 17 day trip out west a few years back. Will easily transport two full sized canoe. Use for projects around the house and other trailering needs. Hauled 1000lbs of dirt the other day. Top comes off if you need it to.

While at the higher end of trailer costs, if you shop around for something with similar features, you will find the ST is with in the ballpark. I have also looked at a Morris Mule and a few others.
