I found an OT Penebscot 17' model year 2004 for sale (asking $500), the seller is not sure what material it is made of. Can anyone identify the material by these pictures? Is it Royalex or poly? If it is Royalex is that a good price for the condition? Thank you

I have the exact same canoe. Royalex, I put a bow reinforcement kit on after my first or second year I had it. Thinking I paid less than a $1000 new for mine back in 2006. Bought from Cabela's.
Love it, really stable, have had it on some nasty water, tracks alright, better when loaded, like driving a bus on some of the rivers we get on, like the Nina/Moose going into Big Moose lake. Getting heavier each year I get older,

The Penobscot from that year is Royalex. The Royalex material was discontinued sometime +/- around 2015.
Here is the Old Town Catalog from 2007. That's as far back as they go on the Old Town website. Scroll to page 16 and you'll see the Penobscot listed as Royalex. It would be the same for the 2004 model.

I would say too much with the repair needed on the bow. Skid plate repair kit is going to run you $80 plus your time. You're $600 into it now. Northstar skid plates

I have the same boat in green, built in 1996. I bought it for the purpose of whipping Saganaga's windy ass and sneering at the shore-bound Malecites as I flew by. :-)
The hull on my boat is in FAR better condition and I've never given the gunwales a second thought, notwithstanding the occasional tales of separation I've encountered over the years.
As much as it pains me to say this, I'd walk away and keep looking. I've seen others show up in better condition and at prices I could recommend.

I agree that $500 seems high. It needs skid plates immediately. In the first pic, it looks like the gunwales are separating from the hull for some reason. Sometimes Royalex boats have damage from cold winter temperatures that cause the gunwales to shrink more than the hull...so make sure the gunwales are still firmly attached to the hull.
The seats have all been replaced so that's good...but also seems to suggest that the boat may have spent a lot of time stored outside (the color is faded too). I'd say it's a $300 boat and if the gunwales have separated from the hull it may be best to just walk away from it.
