I've used both of these systems (Platypus and Lifestraw) on trips with other people. I don't currently own one, and I'd like to upgrade to a gravity system.

When I compare these two online the reviews are essentially the same. People seem to like them. The Lifestraw is much cheaper.

Hoping for feedback on a comparison of these two items? Anyone have a strong preference or a big complaint with one versus the other?

I have been using the Platypus Gravityworks 4 liter system for several years and at least 10 trips, and it works very well. You just have to watch it and if it stops flowing, hold the clean water reservoir above the dirty reservoir bag and let it backflow or squeeze the air bubbles out. Then it flows fast again. It is so much better than the old Katydyn gravity filter I used to use.

I bought the Platypus for a trip with a buddy that wanted filtered water. Worked fast and flawlessly. Backflushing is easy. I got the 4 liter system and I have to say it was really well designed.

I spent waaaaaay too much time researching this today. I went down the rabbit hole. In case anyone is interested...

They both have good reviews and both are great buys.

I decided to go with the platypus because it’s much faster and appears more durable. Also, I couldn’t find a clear answer on a bladder to fit the clean side of the Lifestraw.

Again, no real complaints for either model. Lifestraw does donate a percentage towards filtration in low resource settings.

I did buy the Lifestraw personal water filter straw. I wanted to give this a try. I used another type of personal straw for some hiking I did out west. I like this Lifestraw product because you can drink right from a water source or put it in a water bottle. I drink a lot of water! So I’m excited to try this. I can use it on hikes and save space. And, I’m thinking when I am canoeing with a group, I can just fill my water bottle more frequently with this straw.

+1

Been using >10 years

Backflushing - bring a big syringe to power backflush. Much easier than running in reverse, especially if seriously clogged.
