If it just scratches on the hull bottom, a spritz and rub down with a UV protectant spray like 303 will go far to hide them.

I’ve been amazed the information I can find searching this forum. I couldn’t find an answer to this question. I was hoping somebody could save me some trouble.

I was told to spray paint a few blemishes on my red Bell Yellowstone to protect from sun damage. Has anyone matched a spray paint color to the canoe color? Or, any other ideas?

Well...here is my tale of woe... I have some small blemishes in which your technique would work, but some larger areas....

I was out with my canoe club, with a new paddler that had only used a plastic (or something like that) kayak from Dick's. You know you can throw those around/drag them all over with no damage.

At the put-in, I took my canoe off and set it in the grass beside my car...I went to pee behind my car...And, this new paddler was trying to be helpful, took the painter rope, and drug my canoe down to the river for me, through gravel. I can still hear the sound..... She just did not know not to do that.

So...I think it will show if I get the color too off, and I am bad at matching colors. But, I have faith my friend's brother can help me get it close.

I don't have a clue, but you might call Northstar Canoe. The folks there are enormously helpful, and of course it's the reincarnation of Bell Canoe Works. I was there a couple weeks ago to have them install foot braces in my Northwind Solo and Ted Bell himself ,along with another worker, did the installation.

Thanks, butthead! (That sounds mean..ha). There's quite a bit of white showing. Good idea about the paint card thingy, too.

Call Northstar- Ted picked a stock true value color back in the Bell days if I recall correctly.

Hi,

I did call. They asked around, and everybody there at the time didn’t know. I appreciated they took a lot of time to ask around.

This is just my favorite canoe, and I don’t want it to look really bad.

I got a red Bell Yellowstone several year ago which was new and slightly damaged in shipping by trucking company. I researched it and masked off couple of small areas and used JB Weld to fill. Try to turn the canoe so the damaged area is level before you put the JB Weld on. After it cured I gently sanded the small area and painted with red acrylic enamel spray paint (this is the type of paint the article recommended for canoes) that I got at hardware store or someplace like Lowes. You will not notice that much of a difference in colors on small areas.

This may be over doing it a bit, but here is another option. Several years ago I remember seeing an auto parts store advertising that they could create any color you wanted in small quantities and put it in a spray can. If you could find a place that provided this service you could take your canoe there and see if they could make the paint you need.

Yes, they’re super helpful. They don’t have the old color. If anyone is interested, their current color is sunrise red.

I’ll just have to match it up as best I can. I’ll post what color seems to work.

That’s a great idea. I called Home Depot. They said they could do it, but they need a small Dime-size piece of the paint. A computer can read the chip and match it. I don’t think I can get that sample but ....My best friends brother owns a auto body shop. So I’m gonna check with him on matching it by sight. Thanks for the idea.

Portage99, I assume that you’re looking to spray paint a Royalex hull?

I suggest you get a RAL COLOR FAN DECK to best match the color. The inexpensive RAL K7 CLASSIC will allow to get a really close match most of the time. You’ll also find that having a color fan is useful for other future non-paddling projects. RAL is an internationally recognized color classification system used in virtually every industry, not just paint.

Once you have the RAL Color Code (RAL ####), go to myperfectcolor and enter the color code and then select what sheen you want it in. I’ve always been able to order spray paint colors from the RAL K7 Classic (<$10 per spray can). Note: there are numerous other online sites to order from.

If you want to get extremely particular about the color match, you can get more expensive and larger color fans or even just a color fan of shades of red. However, the spray paint will have to likely be custom made and will be 15-times + more expensive in the small quantity you'll need.

Note: you can download all of the RAL colors for free online, but unlikely your screen is calibrated for this to be useful.

On the rare occasion that I can't get a good color match with the K7, my hack is to use my K7 fan to visually calibrate a couple of the closes K7 colors on my computer screen and then the larger online color selections are in the ballpark.
