How about using a couple of director's chairs? Put a piece of carpet or small rug or old towels on top and a canoe will slide on top easily. In a previous house I stored a couple canoes long term right side up on director's chairs...they spread out the pressure and seem very gentle on the boat.

I was thinking of board flat perhaps with a "edges" to act as a guide - slide on bow till it passes a cross bar. But the roller or in combination with a "cart" riding on board "rails" might be interesting.

A cart for rolling into storage doesn't have to add significant height. I currently have two canoes stored under a shed. One is strapped to a board that has two small (maybe 3") wheels mounted on the bottom of the board. The canoe is strapped, gunnels down, on the board towards one end of the canoe. I lift the other end barely off the ground and push it, wheeled end first, under the shed then prop the near end on a block to keep it off the dirt. The other canoe is on a storage cart that a friend made. It is a center cart with a wood platform where the canoe rests gunnels down, then on the sides of the platform there are 2x4 s with 2 larger wheels mounted on each side. I think these wheels are attached with carriage bolts sticking out from the 2x4s. Since the wheels are near the center of the canoe, even though they are larger than the "end cart" wheels the ends of the canoe hanging down aren't very far off the ground. Your "very uneven/sloped dirt" sounds like much more of a challenge than the relatively smooth dirt under my shed, but maybe some sort cart would work.

Anyone have solutions for storing canoes where it slides in long ways? I'd like it to be too side down and preferably sit on two two cross bars - like saw horses. Can't comfortably get in beside it. Just haven't seen this one before and under narrow long porch from end looks like good place in new - ti me - house.

I had end-on access to a garage attic. Lots of carpeting made insertion and extraction easy. Throw in a few mothballs to deter critters from setting up housekeeping in your boat.

Bill, perhaps with one end of the canoe strapped gunwales-down on a cart like this you could push the canoe into your storage area, then place a sawhorse under the accessible end.

I was thinking about the Hully Rollers made by Yakima used to load boats from the rear rather than side. In your case a couple pipes, one inside the other and glue a rubber or other surface to grab while it rolls. You could do one at the entry and tip the boat and slide it over the roller letting it settle on the supports. Not sure if that is what you are thinking, but it would work.

If I didn't have so much other junk in there I could walk them in and out pretty easily.
