That's my setup as well. Don't trust the ropes alone.

3 canoes in my messy garage (ok...actually a 4th up front...). Bottom one is on sawhorses with storage beneath. Top 2 are hanginging...one rack from the other. Actually not hard to get either out if you position your ropes properly. If I retire next year, there will be a new storage shed built for boat in middle and canoes on sides.

I dithered with suspending my canoe from the ceiling of my garage. Seemed like a lot of work and stuff to buy. I have a finished walk-in basement with a sliding glass door. Turned sideways the canoe will fit through the door and I figured I could rearrange the furniture and put the canoe on a couple of saw horses at one side of the rec room. Long story short, I ended up with the canoe before I had the saw horses. So in a pinch, I got out two giant suitcases and put the canoe on them. It worked so well that I have never looked back. Any kind of box or tub wide enough to support the gunwales and high enough to keep the canoe off the floor would work.

Fasten a 2x4 horizontally — one end to the back wall of your garage and the other to the adjoining wall. You’ll want to miter the ends first so the lay flush to the wall.
Place it high enough so the canoe will be out of the way when you’re finished.
Hang the other end of your canoe with a chain suspend from the garage rafter. 
Fosten two small blocks of wood atop the 2x4 to keep the nose of the canoe centered towards the corner and from sliding fully into the corner against your garage.
Trial and error carpentry works for me and I have zero skills in this area.

I hang mine in garage. I use a pulley system to raise and lower it easily. Also, I tie around a cross beam as a backup should the initial rope give way. With cars under the canoe, I believe in a backup to avoid any possible damage below in the event of failure of rope or pulleys.

I'm pretty fortunate because we have an old barn on our property. Now that I'm retired, one of my first projects during the time of Covid was to build racks for my canoes. I now have one three-tiered rack and a double, side-by-side rack that fits four more canoes. All my kayaks are stored on their side on another set of racks and my guide boats are on separate saw horses. All in all, it's amazing how much space my barn actually has inside when everything this up and off the floor.

You can't see them very well, but I made 2 triangular shaped brackets out of light weight 3/4" angle iron that I fastened to the wall, back when I had a garage with 10 foot sidewalls. I put some 1/2" plywood on the top of the brackets to protect the wooden gunnels from the metal. Not the best picture, but you get the idea.

Here is a rack I built a couple of years back. Holds 8 canoes but I built it a little too high so the top section will only hold certain boats with still having the ability to open the garage door. I also put it on casters so I could move it and push it up against the garage wall.

My setup. 
2 in the garage which is just a 1 1/2 car garage. An old Grumman behind the garage and the last canoe is in my brother’s car barn.

For my kayaks I use hangers...are heavier than canoes and easier to get up out of way in shallow garage to keep out of sun.
For my canoes I have always used wall hangers. I have a pair of aluminum hangers I got from AustinKayakCanoe or Piragis...cant remember. ANyhow they bolt to wall studs and are foldable. Which I like for when boat is off wall so I dont run into them. Wife is 5'3" so she walks under it all the time without issue and parks her car on that side... I also like that I can slide paddles across yoke and thwart and hook PFDs to underneath for tidy storage.
There are other brands and materials but similar....keeps them out of sight for theft and out of sun and weather here in southeast.

Surfman I really like your rack and would love to have something similar. It looks like you have different heights for the lowest two levels? Would you provide measurements on heights between horizontal bars and overall width depth height measurements?
Also, you seem to have remarkable taste in canoes!

Thanks! These weren't cheap but exactly what I was looking for for my personal storage I was building on 4x4's behind my shed. Looks like I will return all my supplies to Menards I got to build my own yesterday lol.
