This was headgear for an Edisto River (South Carolina) paddling trip. I should mention that it was Easter weekend.

Sunday afternoons boonie style or Charter hat - lightweight and my head doesn't sweat like it did with the Tilley or the Filson shelter cloth hat.
Sunday afternoons hat was recommended by a dermatologist friend for sun protection.
The Tilley is nicer for cold weather.
The Filson was very hot, retained the moisture/sweat and shrunk. The waxed cotton kept water out as well as it kept sweat in. I was glad to give it away.

+1 only test flotation once but the rest mirrors my experience "
+2 on the Tilley airflow. It’s floated once. I wrote in permanent marker the names of two good friends who passed away on the brim. It keeps me grateful that I am able to be in the BWCA.

+3 on the Tilley Airflow hat. It keeps the sun off my neck and ears. It’s not hot on after spending hours out fishing. On windy days I use the cord to prevent the hat from blowing off my head. It’s worth every Penny.

A couple years back my wife got a Stetson Bozeman Wool Hat as a Christmas present for me. I've loved it so far. Since it's wool it does well with moisture and it keeps me warm, but never makes me hot. I'd highly recommend it if you want to spend a little but not a lot on a new nice hat to last a while.

Not a Tilley - I usually find my Tilley way to warm hiking, well into the shoulder seasons, and relatively heavy. It is awesome in every other aspect and commands respect. :-) My favorite cap was a Old Navy ball-cap like, super light weight, dries fast, breathable, and made me look good. Outdoor Research has similar caps, but not in my small size... Sorry I have to pictures.

Another one here for the Tilley Airflow. I use mine not only for canoeing but for hiking out West in Utah and Arizona.

White Titleist golf hat. Very cool and dries quickly after being dipped in the lake. In the spring or fall this would probably not be ideal but it’s hard to beat for summer relaxation mode.

I have to say my "REI Paddling hat" is by far my favorite. In high winds, the chin strap has saved the hat from the lake many times. It also serves as a sleep aid.

Did someone try embroidered cap ? If so, which brand will fit the same way? My father got one and handed it to me from the California Tour. I have cut it out and I like the fit, but it's difficult to find the caps that fit in the same way.

Like my Tilley Airflow. Went thru 5 or 6 boonie type hats from columbia, dorfman pacific and some generics. They were always floppy and more so if it rained.

An old post on Tilley hats was recently commented on, and asked the question: Are they worth it? Well that got me thinking. What is everybody's favorite BWCA hat? Mine is the Shelta Seahawk. Not the cheapest hat around, but I love it. It was a Father's Day gift a few years back. When and if this one ever falls apart, i will definitely buy another one. Totally worth it. Show some pics of you and your favorite hat enjoying the outdoors.

I also have rei which I like. Tillys look like nice but I refuse to spend more on a hat then what good pair of pants cost!
I like caps but I’ve seen way too many farmers with the tops of their ears trimmed due to cancer!

After decades of canoe/sun hats... the last ten years, using a Tilley.
Tilley durability and washer capability are real plus factors. Even though mine was an airflow model, it was still very hot...like having a sauna on my head.
My top priorities are ventilation and sun protection...last season I tried the Sunday Afternoons Charter Breeze model... for me it is the best hat I have found with those features.

I have a Tilley Airflow that I spent way too much on. It was one of those purchases where I was on my way north and had made the decision ahead of time that I was going to get a hat. I stopped at REI and had to choose between the expensive good one or a cheap one I didn't like and looked like it would turn into a rag the first time it rained. I should have walked away, but I was in a hurry and emotionally invested in getting a hat...
I like my hat and use it often, not trying to say anything negative about the hat, just my decision making at the time. Being vented is a great feature that I really notice and enjoy. There is just no way I could have justified $90 about 5 years ago on a hat if I had been thinking rationally.

Most of the time I wear a Headsweats running cap. Cool, drys fast, and shades my eyes. If I feel the need for additional protection for my neck and ears I use a Tilley Airflow, but most of the time I grab a Headsweats cap. The Tilley provides more protection, I just prefer the Headsweats.

A bucket hat from Outdoor Research is my go-to. Very occasionally I may roll with a shemagh. Hoping that True North will someday make their maps in roughly 48x48 in so that I could just wear their map as a shemagh.

I'm sold on the Tilley Airflow. I previously owned 5 or 6 cheaper vented hats. Each one exposed my scalp to sunburn through the venting. In frustration, I finally bought the expensive Tilley and have never regretted it.

Yankees baseball hat. Doesn't get too hot, if it does I dip it in the water. Warm when it has to be, also.

I like my Tilley airflow in cold weather but it's too warm for anything above 40 degrees. I have a cheap Bass Pro Shops boonie hat (currently clearance sale for $9.77) I bought when I had an unexpected opportunity to fish on a business trip to Miami that works great unless it's stocking cap weather.

Without doubt for any Wilderness canoe trip other than in October a Filson Packer in waxed tin cloth. Extremely durable, right sized brim, and if given a recoat of wax every year or two sheds water. In a steady rain or down pour it can be angled slightly to keep rain off my glasses. For colder and drier times Filson merino wool beanies. The previous version is a bit more durable than the current “watch cap” version, but there are more color options now. I never go on a wilderness canoe trip without each.
