Do you know where I can buy this mount in a store? I went to their website and it cost $16.95 for mount and $16.47 to ship!"

Cabela's carries them if you have one near you. If I want something I just get it. You only need to buy it once.

Thanks for the heads up. I was able to order one for pick up at Basspro near me.
I’m usually one for just buying what I want but paying as much for shipping as the product just didn’t seem right to me.

Jackfish: "Frenchy: "For years I just layer the rod across my hip with the reel between legs."
I'm envisioning the way you have been doing it has the rod butt on the floor with the rod coming up between your legs and stretching over the side?

Our group uses a similar method. Rod butt on the floor BEHIND the left ankle and the rod laying IN FRONT of the right lower leg (the other person is opposite). The rod ends up laying on the gunwale with one eye inside for support when a strike occurs. Works great with no issues at all.

Just throwing it out there in case you want to avoid carrying the rod holder(s)."

I've always done "hands free" trolling with the rod butt over the left gunwale and under my left leg, rod blank resting on my right leg. A little pressure holds everything in place with the tip of the rod straight out from the side of the canoe. Reverse for the other side.

With the leg under the rod it is held up off the gunwale. I can paddle either side.

Brian, did you type that correctly? If the rod is over the left gunwale, we always have the rod in front of our left leg and behind our right ankle. If it's under your left leg when a fish bites, you don't have any support of the rod and also have to deal with getting it out (at least the way I'm reading your post).

Strange that nobody has yet mentioned RAM Mount (click 'Handlebar/Rail' under 'Mount Function' on the linked page. Or, 'Fishfinder Mounts' in the tabs.) Dozens of clamps, arms, and device cradles for clamping anything you bring along to the thwart in front of you. Rock solid.

these are the kind i use , a little bulky but rock solid (you can adjust the rod angle to where you like it) they work great on my oldtown ,(other canoes add a couple of wood shims) and with a couple of 7' rods trolling , you can have a wide spread on your lures to cover more area.

I use the Tite-Lok attached to a movable mount I made. When its not in use I pack it away and the mount clamps on behind the bow seat.

I don’t necessarily recommend what I use as it is over kill, but I love my FOLBE Jr.
Rock solid, easy to remove, infinite angles.

Here is a little twist to the question, what type of rod holder can/should be used on a rented Kevlar canoe?

Something that mounts on a thwart is a better choice than something that clamps to a gunwale. There are lots of options out there, including brackets that clamp to 1" aluminum tubing.

You have to be very careful with clamp-on rod holders. I've seen plenty of canoes at outfitters that have a little hole punched through the side of the boat where the rod holder slipped off the gunwale. Ouch.

The Wenonah Versigunwale is one solution to this problem. It lets you mount fishing kayak compatible rod holders directly to a track on the inside of the gunwale. A number of outfitters are adding Versigunwale equipped canoes to their fleets this spring and stocking compatible rod holders for rent or purchase.

I just bought a Yakattack rod holder for my fishing kayak. It mounts on the rails of the kayak. Your picture showed you have a router table and know how to use it. You could use the same board you have in the picture and just cut a slot a shallow slot next to it. The one I just bought was the Pro rod holder. Highly recommended.

If you use a clamp on style over the gunnel, use wood in between the clamp and kevlar.

Yep. That's how I've always done it. Rod butt over left gunwale. Rod tip out to the right.

The rod butt is clamped to the left gunwale by pressure from the left leg. Lifted up at an angle by the right leg that it is resting on top of. When I get a strike I grab the rod above the reel with my right hand, lift my left knee and slide the rod out from under my left leg to set the hook. One fluid motion.

I'm usually paddling the off side (left in this case).

I'm almost always in the stern or in a solo boat and use a spinning rod. Might not work well in the bow.

I picked up the Hitorhike rod holders off Amazon last year. They clamp to the thwarts and are easy to pop off for portage or transport. I think they were $30 for a pair. Really nice quality.

I've always put my rod holders on at the EP and left them on until back at the EP.

I am looking for a clamp on rod holder to use on canoe. Has anyone used either the Eagle Claw or Scotty clamp on rod holders.
We do a lot of trolling for lakers and need something fairly sturdy.
For years I just layer the rod across my hip with the reel between legs. Guess as I get older I’m looking for a new way to be comfortable. Thanks.

I have the Scotty rod holder and I really like it. I have the clamp style and the 1” bar mount. It’s pretty hard to beat a Scotty mount.

I also prefer the Scotty. I've used Tite-Locs before, but had trouble keeping them tight to the gunwales. Here's a photo of my setup. I use a piece of treated wood that is bolted through a couple of holes drilled into the wooden thwart. The wood holds both the detector and Scotty which I can rotate to troll off either side of the canoe....been using this setup for many years on both my Rapidfire and my tandem Bell Northwind....
