I've been meaning to get my kid a nice compass one of these years -- I think I'll try to go with something more plain, but this gives me the idea to have the inside of the top case engraved with something a little shorter and more personal.
I am the guy who stands at the greeting card aisle like a deer in the headlights. I have a big heart and I'm sentimental at times, but it feels like the people who write greeting cards (and all manner of supposedly "inspirational" messages) just come from a different planet than me. Nobody actually talks or writes like that. At least nobody I've ever met.

The compass itself looks pretty decent and they say the case is 100% copper. So it should work ok.

I agree that a compass you picked for them to actually use will be better.
And your own words will make it the best.
