The term “bacterial growth” immediately made my decision for me. I’ll deal with lake water taste.

If I were to squirt some Mio into my water bottle, then suck it through my Lifestraw, would it ruin the straw or otherwise diminish the effectiveness of it? First time going o to the BWCA and am sketchy on the taste of the water from the lake.

I would think it would clog up the filter membrane, but not sure. Also I wonder about bacteria growing in there because of the trapped particles of flavor from the drink mix.

I've never found the taste of filtered lake water to be a problem. The only thing I add to my drinking water is coffee . . . However, I have been called tasteless ;) as always, YMMV

Probably not possible with the life-straw but on a gravity system the addition of an activated carbon filter after the micro filter will remove the "light vegetative" taste of the lake water.

Like boonie, I've never found lake water's taste an issue, and add coffee to some of my drinking water. I'd love a taste of BWCA/Q lake water right now! In the '70s through the late '80s, I frequently added bourbon to my water, but in '88 realized I'm one of many with "Instant Arse-Hole Syndrome" (just add alcohol). Working on my 33rd year...

Filtered water in non-tannic lakes tastes great. A taste close to rainwater, IMO. I use the gravity Sawyer system/filters. I also have a sip-bottle w/sawyer filter that I can just scoop water as I paddle. Those are nice for on-the-move rehydration. Tannic water = Many lakes, ponds and streams are affected by the tannins present in leaves and wood that find their way into these bodies of water. I haven't drawn water from any BWCA lakes with brownish (tannic) water. Yet. I don't think the MIO additive is a good idea utilized that way for reasons mention in other postings. (filter clogging/bacterial growth, especially, in heat.)

I’ve always thought lake water tastes sweet. Or as another poster put it, like rain water. For me, there is absolutely no off taste to lake water. I have a well at home so maybe I taste water differently. I was at a hotel a few weeks back and the water tasted so bleached/chlorinated I couldn’t tolerate it.
Part of the wilderness experience is to taste natural water. You will love it, and keep all the flavorings out unless it’s bourbon around the fire or coffee the next morning. Tom

Never noticed an off-flavor to lake water. I have noticed that it never seems to quench my thirst... I can drink a lot and still be thirsty.
